Monday 11th July
We arrived at Kilve rather sweaty after a very hot coach journey! But we settled in to our dorms and got to eat lunch under the shade of the tree, which was much welcomed. In the afternoon we applied the suncream and headed down to the beach for some fossil hunting and rockpool exploring. Our feet didn't stay dry for long but it was so hot and sunny that we dried out very quickly. Ian, our instructor, located Flatholme and Steepholme for us and then told us a fact about Bryan Adams filming one of his music videos on Kilve beach! On the way back, we stopped at a very pretty place called the Chantry for ice creams. The variety of delicious flavours was amazing and the ice creams were gone in no time. After some down-time in our dorms, the showers were going non-stop so that we were clean and ready for tea in the dining hall. After our chicken curry/vegetable pasta bake, we headed to the maze for an hour of running around and lots of games, including Zombie tag.
Bedtime was relatively calm - it was just too hot to sleep! We eventually all drifted off and quietness descended over Kilve Court.
Tuesday 12th July
Twas the first morning at Kilve
When the weather was mild
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a child!
At 7:30am all was still quiet! By 8am, we were out on the lawn, playing a friendly game of football and cricket with the children from the other school. AT 8:30am we headed in to the breakfast hall and fuelled ourselves for the day ahead. With cereal, yogurts, beans on toast and plenty of fruit juice under our belts, we were ready for a morning of team building. We had lots of mini challenges to complete with our teams - some of which we did more successfully than others - but we did learn that communication was key!
Wednesday 13th July:
As the sun rose this morning, the showers were on and the corridors were buzzing with plans for the day. Rifle shooting; grass sledging; buggy building; stream walk; abseiling and climbing wall were all on the agenda for the various groups. After a breakfast of cereal, fruit and croissants, the children kitted up and got ready to go. The lines on the lawn were somewhat subdued this morning, compared to yesterday, as tiredness is beginning to creep in. But not for long - the first activities got the energy back!
It's been a full on day of 4 different activities for each group. The children who did the stream walk most definitely embraced the muddy bog as the pictures will no doubt prove!
The sun is now out and the children are playing happily on the lawn whilst awaiting the evening meal of spaghetti bolognaise or vegetable lasagne. After tea we're heading up to the field for "Jumblies" which is orienteering around the grounds. What time will lights go out this evening?!
Thursday 14th July
This morning was silent! Apart from the teachers, who could be heard whispering, "Time to wake up everybody!" The sleepy children didn't even make the shower before breakfast today but they did make it down to the breakfast hall in time......just! With scrambled egg on toast devoured, the day began. Mountain biking; grass sledging; fantasy trail; climbing; buggy building and high ropes were on today's timetable and every single activity was greeted with a lot of excitement. There were fears conquered and new skills learnt. The children did a fantastic job of embracing their tasks and the comments afterwards inlcuded: "I can't believe I just did that!" and "I'm feeling proud that I got that high up!"
This afternoon's task was to pack up the bags and suitcases, ensuring ALL muddy shoes and socks could be accounted for! Tonight's excitement will be the disco, around which there has already been many a conversation!
Tomorrow morning, we will be walking up on the Quantock hills before returning to Kilve for some lunch and to say our goodbyes.
Get ready for some tired, happy children at the end of the day tomorrow.....
Friday 15th July
Walking through the fields of the Quantocks is this morning's activity. But we're all a bit tired....
