Autumn has officially started and this allowed some lovely seasonal learning in and around the classroom for Reception.

This included listening to stories linked to all things Autumn such as Tattybogle by Sandra Horn and Ken Brown, Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett and The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater.

The children enjoyed some leaf rubbing activities and their fine motor skills were tested by wrapping the pine cones with wool and the munchkins with as many rubber bands as would fit!

We are continuing with our weekly phonics, learning the phonemes g, o, c and k and are using these sounds to blend simple words. Our tricky word this week was ‘is’.

During maths we have been looking at how to compare and sort different objects and find out what the particular rule for sorting could be e.g blue, small, round, clothes, farm animals etc! The challenge was also to find the odd one out when sorting a group.

Reception have enjoyed singing autumnal songs together set to well-known tunes as an end to a busy and creative week. There will be plenty more exciting activities using natural resources next week to look forward to…

As an introduction to ‘Arts Week’ the children were asked ‘What is art?’ which prompted many interesting ideas and discussions about where art could be found – especially in nature! This led to some exciting and colourful art work which will be part of an exhibition set up in the school. Watch this space!
