Year 6 returned from school camp today spending a week at Kilve Court. The children have been a delight to take away and as always are a credit to our school. A huge thank you to the staff who supported the children with this experience.
Campfest was enjoyed by many families last weekend, please see news of it within this newsletter. Thank you to the PTA organising team who facilitated this for our school.
Please read the end of year celebration letter which I hope captures the incredible year we have achieved at Christ Church and the contribution everyone has made to its success.
We have shared our hot weather plan via Szapp today. School will be open unless we are told otherwise.
Have an enjoyable weekend everyone, keep cool and stay safe.
Thanks so much for all your support this year. We hope that all of you who came to campfest enjoyed the event. We are still finalizing the finances, but we have raised more than £2000.
Thanks to everyone who helped out at the event and to those who came along. In total more than 275 members of our community attended.
Thanks to everyone for supporting our events this year, we have raised about £14,000. Coupled with our profits from last year we have been able to transfer £20,000 to the school for new play equipment which should arrive in the autumn.
As always we would like to invite all parents and carers to get involved in with the PTA next year. We’ll be on the lookout for class reps and helpers for our events. We also have a spot available on the PTA committee if anyone is interested please email: [email protected]
Reception share their learning, and go under the sea!
Wow what a week in the sunshine we have had in reception. We have continued exploring our under the sea topic both inside and outside. We enjoyed creating rock pools and making small worlds. We had more fun with our button box and enjoyed sorting buttons in different ways. We have worked together to create puzzles, make our own Hooray for fish books and been learning about subtraction in maths.
On Monday we had a visit from some of our extended family members where we sang and shared our learning diaries. On Wednesday we also welcomed our parents in to share our learning diaries. It was so lovely to have visitors and to share our favourite learning with them. All the adults that visited were very proud to see our diaries and super work! On Thursday we had an ‘under the sea’ day and dressed up for a day at the seaside, we had jelly fish, sea snakes, sharks, a diver or two and a fair few mermaids as well. We loved seeing our friends and even our teachers dressed up! We used our skills of pushing, pinching and shaping to create starfish using clay. We ended the day with an under the sea parade for the rest of the school to see. Thank you to our parents for helping create our costumes we had such a fun day!
Year 1 Making a healthy lunch and Recipe writing
In Science this week, Year 1 learned more about plants that you can eat. We looked at a variety of fruit and vegetables and learned about which part of each plant you eat, whether the leaves, stem, bulb or fruit. We sorted plants into ‘fruit’ or ‘vegetables’ and used some of these ingredients to prepare a delicious healthy lunch. We made a couscous salad that included peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, sweetcorn, mint, parsley and lemon. It was very tasty and we loved seeing such positive attitudes to trying all the ingredients. Then in Literacy, we learned about the features of instructions and wrote up the recipe for our salad. In Maths, Year 1 have been learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour and we have been so impressed with how speedily they have picked it up. A huge well done for all your hard work this year, Year 1. You are amazing!
Year 2 Miniature Adventures and getting inspired by Kandinsky
This week Year 2 wrote and published their miniature adventure stories. They were able to show off all of the fantastic literacy skills they have learnt throughout the year. In computing the children wowed us with their stop motion animations. Whilst in art they were able to utilise their understanding of primary and secondary colours to create an abstract painting, inspired by the work of Kandinsky and two Cornish artists.
We cannot believe this is the final newsletter for our lovely year 3 cohort! What a fantastic year it has been, filled with learning, laughter and fun. We are ending on a very hot and summery week so we finished off our very apt melting ice creams. These have now been sent home so we hope you enjoy them as much as the children did making them. We think they look fantastic!
In our RE learning this week, we looked at what it means to be Muslim and Christian. We are very lucky to have many children in both classes who were willing to share their faith with us and the children asked thoughtful and sensitive questions.
In year 3 we have managed to cram in all of our learning right up to the very end of the year and although at times we have been hot and sticky, the children as always, have been fantastic. We are looking forward to celebrating a fantastic year on Monday and Tuesday and waving goodbye to our truly wonderful classes. We wish the Year 3’s the very best of luck as they transition into year 4 and look forward to hearing of their continued successes! Good Luck Year 3.
Year 4 is truly bursting with talent! Earlier this week, we were all treated to a wonderful variety performance from every corner of our year group. We had: singers, dancers, acrobats, comedians and musicians who astonished us with their creativity, courage and captivating stage presence. Well done year 4!
Year 5 Reusable Bags and Changing Me Wheels
In our final full week of term, we finished off our topics from this term including DT. This week, we completed our reusable bags and evaluated them against our individual success criteria:
- Have a fun and unique design
- Appeal to a target market aged 10-12
- Include a range of stitching or applique for decoration
- Hold an adequate amount of belongings
- Be well made with strong stitching
We completed our final piece in our Changing Me unit in our last jigsaw lesson. During the lesson, each of us thought about the things we are looking forward to when we move to our next class. In groups, we made spinning tops with four changes we are looking forward to but maybe a little scared of when in the next academic year. Taking it in turns to spin the top we, together, thought of ways to best manage each change.
On Friday, we enjoyed a fun swim at the pool. It was a great way to escape the heat and play water polo and use the floats and toys.
Finally, we also reflected on all the brilliant things that we have done this year, to record our thoughts we made creative pieces that recorded this. It was great to remember our successes and highlights - what a brilliant year it has been. We all agreed Year 5 has been awesome!
The Year 6 Cricket Team took part in a Somerset County Finals Championship in Bridgewater last week. The team did fantastically well against very strong competition and overall finished 6th. The children's behavior and attitude were exemplary, the weather was absolutely stunning, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day.
The story of the week at Kilve Court!:
Monday 11th July
We arrived at Kilve rather sweaty after a very hot coach journey! But we settled in to our dorms and got to eat lunch under the shade of the tree, which was much welcomed. In the afternoon we applied the suncream and headed down to the beach for some fossil hunting and rockpool exploring. Our feet didn't stay dry for long but it was so hot and sunny that we dried out very quickly. Ian, our instructor, located Flatholme and Steepholme for us and then told us a fact about Bryan Adams filming one of his music videos on Kilve beach! On the way back, we stopped at a very pretty place called the Chantry for ice creams. The variety of delicious flavours was amazing and the ice creams were gone in no time. After some down-time in our dorms, the showers were going non-stop so that we were clean and ready for tea in the dining hall. After our chicken curry/vegetable pasta bake, we headed to the maze for an hour of running around and lots of games, including Zombie tag.
Bedtime was relatively calm - it was just too hot to sleep! We eventually all drifted off and quietness descended over Kilve Court.
Tuesday 12th July
Twas the first morning at Kilve
When the weather was mild
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a child!
At 7:30am all was still quiet! By 8am, we were out on the lawn, playing a friendly game of football and cricket with the children from the other school. AT 8:30am we headed in to the breakfast hall and fuelled ourselves for the day ahead. With cereal, yogurts, beans on toast and plenty of fruit juice under our belts, we were ready for a morning of team building. We had lots of mini challenges to complete with our teams - some of which we did more successfully than others - but we did learn that communication was key!
Wednesday 13th July:
As the sun rose this morning, the showers were on and the corridors were buzzing with plans for the day. Rifle shooting; grass sledging; buggy building; stream walk; abseiling and climbing wall were all on the agenda for the various groups. After a breakfast of cereal, fruit and croissants, the children kitted up and got ready to go. The lines on the lawn were somewhat subdued this morning, compared to yesterday, as tiredness is beginning to creep in. But not for long - the first activities got the energy back!
It's been a full on day of 4 different activities for each group. The children who did the stream walk most definitely embraced the muddy bog as the pictures will no doubt prove!
The sun is now out and the children are playing happily on the lawn whilst awaiting the evening meal of spaghetti bolognaise or vegetable lasagne. After tea we're heading up to the field for "Jumblies" which is orienteering around the grounds. What time will lights go out this evening?!
Thursday 14th July
This morning was silent! Apart from the teachers, who could be heard whispering, "Time to wake up everybody!" The sleepy children didn't even make the shower before breakfast today but they did make it down to the breakfast hall in time......just! With scrambled egg on toast devoured, the day began. Mountain biking; grass sledging; fantasy trail; climbing; buggy building and high ropes were on today's timetable and every single activity was greeted with a lot of excitement. There were fears conquered and new skills learnt. The children did a fantastic job of embracing their tasks and the comments afterwards inlcuded: "I can't believe I just did that!" and "I'm feeling proud that I got that high up!"
This afternoon's task was to pack up the bags and suitcases, ensuring ALL muddy shoes and socks could be accounted for! Tonight's excitement will be the disco, around which there has already been many a conversation!
Tomorrow morning, we will be walking up on the Quantock hills before returning to Kilve for some lunch and to say our goodbyes.
Get ready for some tired, happy children at the end of the day tomorrow.....
Friday 15th July
Walking through the fields of the Quantocks is this morning's activity. But we're all a bit tired....
We are going to be collecting in all reading books for the summer holidays this year so we can sort through the books and audit what we have. Please do use Bug Club over the summer should you wish to access reading scheme books.
On Monday I will be sharing details of the summer library reading challenge with families as a summer activity you might like to join in with.
Please return all books to school on Monday.
Thank you for your continued support with reading.
