A huge thank you to our school community and friends who have supported our wonderful PTA. As a result of the fundraising events we have been able to place an order for a new Timber Fort to replace the existing one by the Lansdown Road gate. We hope the fort will be installed in Term 1 of the next school year pending confirmation from the manufacturers.
Our dedicated PTA committee held their AGM at school on Tuesday. Plans are well underway for Campfest, over the weekend of 8th-10th July. If you do not wish to camp, families are welcome to join the fun and activities as day guests,
Looking ahead there are lots of the popular events proposed for next year so please offer your help and support either via the PTA email address or your class rep. The school office can pass on any messages if you are not sure how to make contact.
Year 1 will make the final visit of this school year to Beggar Bush on Monday. The PTA have funded the coaches to keep the cost as low as possible and Clifton College have been generous in support of our trips.

This week in reception it has been all about the bees as we continued our topic of minibeasts. We have been using the pipettes to learn about how the bees collect nectar and worked on spreading and cutting with a knife to make a honey sandwich. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Charles, who taught us lots of bee facts and told us all about being a bee keeper. Thank you Charles.
We also designed and made our very own minibeast gardens. We really enjoyed selecting resources and experimenting with joining materials to create our gardens. We ended the week learning about oral health and how to look after our teeth. We were very grateful to the dental team who visited us to teach us about sugar and the different amounts of sugar in the food we eat. We enjoyed sorting healthy and un-healthy foods for our teeth and practising using a toothbrush to brush teeth. Thank you to the parents who helped make this learning possible.
We have had a brilliant week and look forward to more minibeast exploring next week in reception.
Year 1 Making Maps and Minibeast Data
This term in Computing Year 1 are learning all about data handling. This week we went on a minibeast hunt in the playground to find which is the most common. We kept a tally of the minibeasts we found and then we represented the data we collected by making a pictogram on the computer. In Geography this term we are learning all about maps. This week we learned about aerial views and looked at a variety of aerial photographs. Then we worked with our partners to create an aerial plan of our classroom.
Year 2 started the week with a fantastic day at Beggar Bush where the sun shone for us. We completed 3 activities throughout the day. We made incredible bug mansions (no longer satisfied with bug hotels!) for the woodland minibeasts to enjoy. We also thought about the larger forest dwellers, such as rabbits and foxes, and built them dens and habitats which were finished with such luxuries as swimming pools, zip wires and televisions! What lucky animals! The final activity was making damper bread over the fire which was enjoyed with jam or honey.
In school we have started learning about ‘Brilliant Bristolians’, the first being George Müller who changed the lives of thousands of children in Victorian times by opening orphanages in Bristol. We are looking forward to learning more about him next week when we go on our trip to the Müller museum.
We have continued to monitor the growth of the beans we planted last week and are recording what we observe in our bean diaries. We are using our measuring skills to keep track of how tall they are growing. Our beans are not the only things to be growing in our classrooms. Our caterpillars have followed the story and eaten so much that they became enormous caterpillars. They are all now safely inside their chrysalides and we can’t wait to watch them emerge as beautiful butterflies!
2KH have been extremely fortunate to have had Miss Daniels as student teacher since March. She has shown dedication and enthusiasm for her role as class teacher and the children have really enjoyed having her in class. There have been lots of fun experiences which Miss Daniels has supported, including our trip to Beggar Bush and the excitement of the Explorer Dome.
Miss Daniels has got fully involved with the life of Christ Church Primary School and we are grateful for the support she has given to all pupils that she’s encountered.
We need to congratulate Miss Daniels for not only passing her PGCE, but also getting her first job as a teacher. In September, Miss Daniels will be heading to London to teach a lucky class in Finsbury Park. We wish her lots of luck for all her future endeavours.
Year 3 Theseus and the Minotaur
In Literacy, Year 3 have been continuing learning the story of ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’ by boxing-up the six parts of the narrative. Next week, the children will use this sequence, alongside the design of their very own mythical creature, to innovate their own Greek Myth. They have been very much inspired by our special guest who visited us last week to teach us all about building a gripping storyline.
The children have been answering the question, ‘How can we live more sustainably?’ in Geography. After learning about non-renewable and renewable energy sources, they thought about how we could make our school even more sustainable. Then they designed posters to encourage others around school to adopt sustainable habits e.g. switching off lights, recycling paper, cycling to school etc…
One of this week’s highlights was when Miss Riddiford spotted Tom walking around the playground during Shine and picking up litter of his own accord. What a sustainable superstar and a wonderful example for us all to follow.
In year 3 we have been incredibly lucky to have had a student teacher for 12 weeks, Mr Conquest. Firstly a huge congratulations to him for passing his PGCE and taking his first steps into a career in teaching. Mr Conquest has had a huge impact on the children in 3HR. The classroom has been filled with laughter, smiles and joy thanks to his enthusiasm and creativity. Although being based in 3HR, Mr Conquest has also been of huge assistant in 1TN and across the school helping with trips, assemblies and basically anything anyone has needed! He has become such a valued member of staff over such a short time I know he will be missed so much by not only the children but the whole Christ Church team. We wish you all the best in your next endeavours and hope to see you back at Christ Church as soon as possible! Thank you.
As part of D.T., Year 4 have been busy baking cookies, biscuit tasting and designing recipes to improve a basic cookie recipe. They have practised their weighing and measuring skills as well as critically analysing the taste and texture of different biscuits. Watch out Junior bake off!!
In Literacy, all the children have written fantastic newspaper reports about the adventures of Spy Fox and his recent success saving the world! They have all made amazing progress in their writing this year and were able to apply a range of impressive writing techniques, including puns and idioms.
Year 5 Music Knitting and French
In Literacy this week, we have been focusing on our dictionary skills as well as reading the next story in our Power of Reading text. The children loved the dictionary challenges as well as generating ideas about traditional tales and exploring a bit more about protagonists and antagonists. In our history lesson, we continued our learning about the history of migration. We thought about Push and Pull factors across history and the reasons behind different groups migrating to Britain. The children loved learning that in Bristol there are currently at least 45 different religions, 187 different countries of birth represented, and at least 91 main languages spoken by people living here.
Science this week has seen us continue our learning about life cycles where we focused on reproduction in plants. We continued our learning about Calypso music as well this week and even had a go playing along to our Calypso song using different types of percussion. In French we learned how to say compass directions, then we helped our partner navigate their way to the treasure by giving directions in French.
We would like to thank the adults who donated old material for Year 5 to make shopping bags, we were really grateful to receive so many donations. In our third lesson of DT this term, we learned about why and how templates are used to cut around the material for our reusable shopping bags. We then used scraps of material to make the applique designs for the front of our bags.
Finally, Year 5 knitting and crochet club. It has been fabulous to see so many get involved. Sincere thanks to our art ambassador Freya for coming up with the idea and our Year 5 pupils, Jessica and Sophia, for all their teaching skills in helping their peers learn to knit and crochet. Here is one pupil’s work, she is knitting a scarf having only learned this skill this year.
Year 6 have been enjoying the beautiful sunshine this week as they worked in groups to explore their Jigsaw unit ‘ Changing Me.’
They showed their maturity as they discussed issues and imaginary scenarios that would help them in their transition to secondary school and across year 7
With the bright sun in the sky, and the strong smell of fresh manure in the air, our cricketers took part in their final league session. Our 'B' team continued to improve, .and registered another victory; thank you to Poppy (Y5) for standing in at the last minute. Our 'A' team played another two matches and continued their extraordinary run, with another two wins - remaining unbeaten in the league. This means Christ Church topped the group and will head to the county finals on 7th July in Wembdon, near Bridgwater. Thank you to Oscar (Y5) and Josh (Y6), who joined the 'A' team with short notice, to support their emphatic journey to the finals. The team received their winning medals in today's Celebration Assembly, entering the hall, to the booming beat of Seven Nations Army by The White Stripes.
Thanks as always to all the parents who supported. Further thanks go to Miss Didymus, Mr Campbell, Mr Dixon-Lewis and Mrs Brown for their support throughout. Another big thank you to Mr Curry, for his excellent Early Bird Cricket training sessions, and also for supporting on the final league session. Stay tuned to find out how they get on in a couple of weeks.
Bristol Beacon Orchestra Workshop
On Tuesday 5 excited musicians left school at lunchtime to join the Bristol Beacon Primary Orchestra Workshop.
We joined 140 other children from primary schools across Bristol to make music together! We spent the afternoon having several practice runs ready for our performance at the end of the afternoon. As a break from all that hard practicing, we sang lots of fun songs in parts.
At the end afternoon family turned up to watch our concert. We did it! We came together to perform three pieces including “Mission Impossible” and “Seven Nation Army”. It felt nerve wracking but also exciting and fun. To perform as an orchestra was an amazing experience!
