We kept cool and carried on…in the heat! We are fortunate to have plenty of shade within our tree lined site, we kept off the games court, drank plenty of water and used the fans and air conditioning.
We had a fantastic celebration assembly today and some parents/carers were able to join us and get that feel good Friday feeling to end the week. It was great to celebrate and share the children’s achievements of this week.
A choir of 50+ children in years 3 and 4 participated in an event at the Bristol Beacon on Tuesday. It was an opportunity to raise the roof and sing with children from other local schools. Thank you to Mrs Brown, Mrs Duquemin, Miss Cator and the parents/carers who helped to walk with the children.
Year 5 have been to Beggar Bush and Year 1 participated in a wildflower hunt on the Downs. Year 6 had a successful evening of cricket in the league. We also welcomed into school the parents/carers of our new Reception children joining in September. At the moment we have a few spaces, if you know of anyone seeking a school place for their pre-school child.

Reception enjoyed a colourful and wriggly start to their new topic of ‘Minibeasts’ through the book ‘A Good Place’ by Lucy Cousins. We enjoyed using pastels to create our own insects and gardens in the same style.
This also coincided with the exciting arrival of our class caterpillars which we will be watching carefully over the coming weeks. This centred our learning around ‘caterpillars’ and ‘butterflies’. We read the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle and tried to retell the main events day by day as in the book.
In maths we have been learning how to put larger numbers into groups and share quantities equally. We enjoyed sharing the insects onto leaves and sharing buttons equally with the Gingerbread men.
We have been ordering the stages of the life cycle of a butterfly and have made our own paper chain caterpillars and symmetrical patterned butterflies. What a wonderful week!
Please upload any pictures of ‘minibeasts’ found on any impromptu bug hunts to Google classroom – we will happily share them in class!
Happy hunting!
Year 1 Epic quest to the Downs
This week, Year 1 embarked on an epic quest up to the Downs in search of clues, treasures and wildflowers. We peregrinated all the way to Bristol Zoo, where we met our knowledgeable and lovely guides for the day for a safety talk. We were then led to a secret spot on the Downs where our search for the clues, treasures and mystery wildflowers began in earnest. It was a mightily hot day, so we had to stay hydrated and keep to the shade as much as possible. Piece by piece, we found the answers to a dozen questions about the various flowers found there. Our favourite flower of all was the Bristol Onion! We want to say a huge thank you to the Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project for providing us with this experience.
You may have noticed some little pots appear at the windows of the classrooms and a pot of wriggly caterpillars (which will be released when they’ve transformed into butterflies)! Year 2 have started to learn about the growth of plants and minibeasts. To bring the topic to life, they’ve planted bean plants and recorded their predictions inside their ‘bean diary’. Due to the scorching temperatures, the teachers have been lovingly watering them after it’s cooled down. Soon the children will be able to measure how much water they’ll need to tend to their plants and how external conditions can affect growth. All of the children have been eagerly anticipating the first shoot – it’s bean a good test of patience! In Literacy, Year 2 have continued to explore Where The Wild Things Are, looking closely at the main character, Max. They have focussed their attention on writing a super email to Max’s mum, using first person, suffixes and expanded noun phrases.
In Design and Technology Year 2 have designed vehicles. The children wowed their teachers with some great vocabulary, including: ‘aerodynamic’, ‘chassis’ and ‘streamlined’ . They discussed gravitational force and how their vehicles would be able to move smoothly with axels and wheels. The children were also able to make a connection with gravity when discussing weight in mathematics. They had great fun using the balance scales to measure after predicting which object would weigh the most.
Year 3 Mechanisms and Script Writing
What a beautiful sunny week! We have thoroughly enjoyed the warm, bright weather this week and are welcoming summer! With father’s day coming up, we thought we could link our father’s day cards link to our DT topic ‘mechanisms’. We designed a pop up Robot card using some complex folds and they look brilliant. We hope the children’s special people in their lives enjoy them.
Carrying on with the DT project we moved onto making ‘a grabber’ using leavers and linkages. We created joints using split pins and a complex design. This took a lot of patience and logic and the children were even fixing the teacher’s example!
Thank you to those year 3 children who did such a beautiful performance at Bristol Beacon on Tuesday. You represented Christchurch brilliantly and we are very proud of you.
3ED had a special visitor this Friday. Penelope's mum Ms Beeson, who is a script-writer for Casualty, came in to do a workshop for the children. They were fascinated to hear all about her work and were delighted to write a rather whacky story together as a class. They learnt all about using twists and turns in story writing and she gave us inspiration in the form of a bag filled with objects to help us think of the next part of the story. The children were then given their own exciting script, written by Ms Beeson, which they directed and acted out. It was a wonderful morning which built lots of enthusiasm for writing in the children.
Year 4 have made the most of the sunny weather today and created our cyanotypes, inspired by Anna Atkins and the first book of photography. The children laid flowers and plants on light sensitive paper and all of them have developed into beautiful and individual photographs.
Year 5 Beggar Bush and Mammals
What a jam packed week we've had in Year 5 this week! The weather was superb for us on Monday for our Beggar Bush outdoor activities which involved Team Building, Axe Throwing and Den Building. Needless to say, the day was awesome!
We have continued honing our tennis skills during PE - practicing our ball striking and positioning skills.
During science we have been exploring life cycles, namely those of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. We looked at a chicken egg and researched the different parts and functions of the egg. The children had a cracking time!
Year 6 had a brilliant workshop, delivered by Sally Benwell (Education Volunteeer) from the RNLI station, Portishead. The main theme of the presentation was water safety and Sally gave out lots of brilliant tips. The children learnt about the flags on a beach and what they mean; they also learnt some top tips for staying safe whilst at the beach.
1) Stop and think
2) Stay together
3) Float
4) Call 999 or 112
This week in French, Year 6 learnt the names of modes of transport and places in a town. To start with, they watched a video about children's school journeys in different countries. Then, they used previous knowledge to build their sentences to describe their route to school. In pairs and on paper, they created maps of an imaginary town.
KS2 Choir at the Bristol Beacon
On Tuesday afternoon, the KS2 choir headed to Bristol Beacon for a Summer Sing celebration with some other Bristol primary schools. The children have been working hard on a weekly basis to learn all the songs off by heart and every single one of them did a fantastic job. They sang their hearts out and were praised by Bristol Beacon staff for their singing. A special well done to Elisa for her bravery in singing a solo at the concert; she didn't know there was a solo part until she got there! She showed our school value of aspiration through and through. All the children behaved brilliantly, walked there and back sensibly and really were Christ Church ambassadors. Well done!
Thank you also to all the parents/carers who walked with us and helped to keep us safe.
