Welcome back to Term 6! We have had a busy but most enjoyable week. Most notable was our Jubilee tea party to mark the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II. The children had a fun afternoon with entertainment from Nutty Noah and a street party style gathering in the playground. Our PTA then provided a tea party for parents/carers which again was a lovely, jubilant event to honour the Jubilee. Thank you to everyone who helped to organise and contribute to these events; hopefully the children will remember them.

In term 6, we will be delivering the ‘Changing me,’ unit of Jigsaw our Personal Social and Health Education curriculum including Relationships and Sex education. Please read the letter sent in term 5 to parents/carers for further information, it may be found in the Szapp feed.
Year 6 residential camp to Kilve court is fast approaching there will be a short presentation for parent/carers on Wednesday, 15th June at 3.15pm. If you are unable to attend at short notice the information will be shared with parents/carers and the class teachers are more than willing to answer any further questions.
Start of term reminders
- Attendance and punctuality.
It is the law that children should be in school everyday unless there is an authorised reason for their absence. If your child is not able to attend school you must notify the school office of their absence and if it is a planned absence e.g. an unavoidable medical appointment, parents/carers must complete a request for absence form. In some circumstances we are able to authorise absence but may request further information from parents/carers. Our Attendance policy is available on our school website and paper copy available from the school office. The SZapp Forms and Documents tile links to these documents as well.
Please also ensure your child is on time for the start of school. Lateness equates to lost learning and can also lead to the same sanctions as unauthorised absence.
- Contact information and new medical information.
Please ensure that the contact details we hold at the school office for your child should we need to contact you are up to date. Please also provide details of any new medical needs identified for your child.
- Parking
For the safety of everyone please do not drop off/pick up your child(ren) at the gate entrances to school. This is to ensure that our children are safe, can be seen and can cross the roads safely. The school car park is for staff and authorised visitors only, and at all times including pickup/drop off at Shine.

Reception - Beggar Bush and cars, trucks, bikes and scooters
Reception have had a busy start to the term with lots of exciting learning opportunities. We began the week with a trip to Beggar Bush where we practised our drilling and sawing skills to make a necklace, toasted marshmallows on the fire and found fairy doors!...We even found some fairies!
A real firefighter came to visit to tell us about their job, their truck and why they need different parts of their uniform. We even got to try the uniform on!
Our transport topic has continued for a final week, allowing us to learn about vintage cars, scooters, skateboards and the history of bikes. Some lovely year 6's came to tell us about their road bikes and scooters and Emma's Daddy kindly lent us his electric bike to see. Thank you! We had so much fun riding our own scooters and bikes. We were also excited to see a vintage Aston Martin and learn how it had been restored.
We ended the week with our Jubilee celebrations, making party hats and flags for our tea party and watching 'Nutty Noah'.
Year 1 Where the Wild Things are
This week we have been exploring the characters in our book, Where the Wild Things Are. We started by searching for wild things in the outdoor classroom and then read Maurice Sendak’s book – the children were abuzz with questions about the real and the imaginary worlds inhabited by the protagonist, Max. Inspired by the character’s feats of imagination, the children put their own to impressive use, using natural materials found in the outdoor classroom to make their own ‘wild thing!'
As usual, the week has flown by and Year Two have been very busy!
In geography the children learnt all about dairy farming and how climate and location can affect pasture fields and milk production. The children applied their knowledge to create detailed drawings of the Devon countryside, some even when on to analyse rainfall data.
After we had identified Celsius and Millimetres in geography, Year 2 were introduced to other units of measurement. Year 2 discussed equivalence discovered that 1 meter is the same as 100 centimetres. The children were also introduced to our new Power of Reading book 'Where The Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak. The children explored the personality traits of the mischievous 'Max'.
However, perhaps the highlight of the week was watching a comedy sketch and enjoying strawberries and cake in celebration of the Queen's Jubilee! Despite the excitement, the children behaved wonderfully. Well done Year 2!
The final term of Year 3! We hope you had a lovely half term break and are ready for the final summer term. The children came back refreshed and ready to get straight into learning. We began with our final Science topic of ‘Plants’. We had a flower criminal in the class room who cut up our beautiful tulips! The children returned after to lunch to crime tape and flowers everywhere. We turned it into a learning opportunity and explored the parts of a flower and reassembling with our new knowledge. It was so much fun and the children were so engaged with the make up of the flowers.
We also very much enjoyed our Platinum Jubilee celebrations. After many stories of street parties and celebrations during half term, we had our very own Christ Church party! It has been a great way to round off a successful first week and we cannot wait to make the most of these last few sunny weeks.
Year 4 Clarice Cliff coil pots
Here in year 4, we’ve had our creative hats firmly stuck to our heads this week. In our literacy lessons, we’ve been brightening up our classrooms with summer themed poems. The children have worked their socks off to produce some truly beautiful narrative poems, chock-full of rhyming couplets.
In our art lessons, we were inspired by the ceramic works of Clarice Cliff to make our own coil pots which we will go on to decorate in her immutable style. We loved working with the clay and although we got a bit messy, we’ve been absolutely kiln it!
In science this week we looked at the similarities and differences between different animal species and their life cycles. We used an iPad to carry out some research and then drew Venn diagrams to compare the life cycles of a range of animals.
In literacy, we dived into the wonders of the Caribbean to begin our new Power of Reading book, Tales from the Caribbean. We thought about what we know already before carrying out some research on different islands and making our own class book about the Caribbean.
In maths we continued our geometry work on angles and learned about calculating angles on a straight line, using a protractor to measure angles and accurately draw them. We even had a go at spotting angles in a painting by the Russian artist Kandinsky!
History saw us beginning our new unit on the history of migration to Britain. We thought about the definition of the word migration and where we have migrated from as a class before having a look back at different periods in history we have already studied to spot the similarities and differences in the reasons why different groups (such as the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings) migrated to Britain.
Our Jubilee Tea Party, activities, and performance from Nutty Noah were a highlight of the week. We all came together as a KS2. The afternoon was filled with chatting, singing, laughing, and plenty of cake and strawberries - what a delight.
Year 6 Downs Wildlife Project, and creative writing
Year 6 spent a fantastic morning with the Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project this week. They enjoyed a bracing walk to the sea walls where Mandy told them all about the rare plants and trees that only live in this particular place in Bristol. They then played a game to explore why some of the rare species died out and finally met the hairy conservationists ( cashmere goats) who were drafted in to help alleviate the problem of tree crowding in the Gorge. As an added treat they saw a Peregrine falcon in flight… WOW!
We are so proud of year 6 and the effort that they are putting into their writing this term. They are drafting, editing and publishing with flair and creativity. Well done
