- Have a lovely half term break
Term 5 has been a short term but nonetheless full of activity and learning. We have had a colourful day to mark the start of the half term week during which the Platinum Jubilee celebrations will begin for Queen Elizabeth II. We are looking forward to our Jubilee tea afternoon on Thursday, 9th June; children will have a Jubilee tea party during the afternoon and parents/carers are invited to join at 3.15pm.
Mr Campbell led a most enjoyable celebration assembly this morning and we will be inviting parents/carers to join these in term 6, if your child is receiving a certificate.
Our Reception children have journeyed the furthest this week; walking to the Downs for a workshop on Tuesday, but the children were most excited about their train ride from Clifton Down station to Severn Beach. The children were ‘wonderful walkers’ and took the experience in their stride! Thank you to the parents/carers who came along for the ride your support was much appreciated.
In term 6, we will be delivering the ‘Changing me,’ unit of Jigsaw our Personal Social and Health Education curriculum including Relationships and Sex education. Please read the letter sent last week to parents/carers for further information, it may be found in the Szapp feed.
The dates section below details our known dates for term 6; it is a busy time of year. I will write further when we return in term 6, about how we support the children make their transition into the next school year and our end of year reporting arrangements.
School uniform; Please name any new uniform items, we find a huge volume of unnamed items that cannot be returned to their owners. These will be passed on to Mary’s Living and Giving shop for re-sale.
Tomorrow Friday 27th May is an ACADEMY day - no children in school. We look forward to seeing the children again on Monday 6th June.

Reception have had a very exciting and busy week this week exploring their local area.
On Tuesday we walked to The Downs. We had such a lovely time in the sunshine learning about birdsong and the birds that we can see and hear. We used the wild flowers, leaves and grasses to create smelly plant cocktails and ended by making beautiful butterflies using nature. We had such a lovely trip and loved being in the outdoors.
As part of our transport topic following our train talk where we learnt about staying safe on the train we walked to Clifton Down and took the train to Severn Beach. We learnt lots and had a great time on the train and looking at the Severn Bridge and other landmarks around the local area. We then compared old and new trains and looked at similarities and differences.
We ended the week learning about the Queen’s Jubilee and used the coins we all brought in to create a collage of the Queen. We really enjoyed dressing up in red, white and blue and learning about the jubilee and what we are celebrating.
Thank you to all the parents and carers this week who prepared us so well for our trips and for all those who gave up their time to ensure we could go out and learn about our local community.

With Jubilee celebrations fast approaching we have created a display in our shared corridor of some of the wonderful Queen portraits from our art ambassador competition earlier this year. We think it looks stunning. Unfortunately, not all of the 70 entries have been displayed here but all entries were celebrated in a PowerPoint in a previous newsletter.
Year 1 Victorian Schools and Plant Diaries
This week Year 1 have been learning all about what school was like for children in Victorian Britain. We started by looking at a variety of objects and made guesses about what they might be used for. The artefacts included a slate and slate pen, an ink well and dip pen, a back straightener, a spinning top and a cane. In Literacy, we practised using question marks by writing questions about what else we would like to find out about Victorian school life. Year 1 went on to compare Victorian schools with schools today and experienced what a Victorian school lesson would be like. In Science, we observed how our nasturtium plants have changed and completed our plant diaries. Some of us have taken the plants home to look after and some of us will be planting them in the outdoor classroom. Well done for all your hard work this term Year 1!
This week both Year 2 classes have worked collaboratively and used mental arithmetic to solve the mystery of the Queen's missing brooch. The answers revealed clues to help them unmask the culprit! In Literacy, the children finished their innovated fairy tales and started to write a poem influenced by Ian McMillan's 'Ten Things Inside a Wizard's Hat'. They innovated the poem and called it 'Ten Things Inside The Queen's Handbag'. The children loved decorating their handbags and publishing using their best joined handwriting. They might even get sent to the Palace!
In History, Year 2 finished their lessons on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. They used enquiry and debate to compare the achievements of both nurses and even used a Venn Diagram to organise their findings. After a busy term, they are going to need a restful half term holiday.
Year 2 Les trois petits cochons (The Three Little Pigs)
This term, Year 2 had lots of fun learning the French words for pig (cochon), house (maison), small (petit), grand (big), wolf (loup), chimney (cheminée), straw (paille), wood (bois) and brick (brique). We used flash cards, mimes, games and recall techniques to memorise and be able to retell the story together. This week, the children took great pleasure in reading and drawing pictures to match the key words from the story. At the end of the day, they were very proud to take their work home to show their parents.
We have taken a journey back in time this week with our History Topic ‘Riotus Royalty’. We started with William the conqueror, King John and now Henry VIII! King Henry was a fascinating character and the children were very curious about some of his antics. They asked thoughtful questions and were able to share some existing knowledge. After collecting some facts about the king and his six wives, the children made fortune tellers to play with each other to find out even more!
We ended this term’s PE athletics topic with some class Olympics. We set up stations of all the skills we have learnt this term from throwing, sprinting, long jump to hurdles. It got quite competitive and the children have definitely improved.
The children threw themselves into everything this term. We had so much to squeeze in and they made it all so enjoyable and fun. We hope you all have a restful half term and come back ready to make the most of our final term together in year 3!
Year 4 ...3..2..1 Strike a Pose!
3...2...1...strike your pose! To bring our photography power of reading book to a close we spoke to Miss Cator's Dad on zoom. He is a photographer and he taught the children all about the history of the camera, answered interview questions and gave top tips on how to shoot a portrait. Some of our best tips from him were to have fun and experiment with a camera. After the zoom, everyone took turns being the photographer and the model and produced original self-portraits.
In R.E., we've been considering the question, 'What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today.' We've had some interesting discussions about similarities and differences to Hinduism and other religions as well as learning all about meaning of the Puja tray and the life and teachings of Gandhi.
This week has seen us conclude our unit of performance poetry in Literacy. Last week we performed a range of different poetry to the rest of the class. It was great to hear and see how each group or individual had thought about:
- Volume
- Use of different voices
- Body position – how to stand or move
- Expression
- Pauses
This week we have been hard at work creating some of our own: haikus, shape poems and even atmospheric poems about the National Parks to link with our Geography work.
On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to join Sara and Jane from the Bristol Museum Learning Team in an online workshop about Predators and Prey. We were fascinated by the facts we learnt. Did you know that animals with eye sockets on the side of their heads have almost 360 degree vision and are most often prey, lions can use their tongue to lick the skin off their prey and some animals pretend to be poisonous so they didn’t have to waste energy creating poison, so they mimic the colours of poisonous prey? It was a great start to our science learning about animals and habitats which will happen in term 6.
We thought about the similarities and differences between The Everglades National Park and Dartmoor National Park in Geography and created amazing double page spreads to compare them.
In preparation for the RWA ‘Me, Myself, I’ self-portrait competition we have been drawing our own self-portrait using a range of graded pencils. We have drawn portraits in two poses, one pulling a funny face and the other we are going to create a portrait which expresses our hobbies and interests.
Year 6 have been busy writing their twisted fairy tales in Literacy this week, which we have created as a treat for our Reception buddies to enjoy. We first looked at the traditional tale of Cinderella and thought about how we could twist the personalities of the characters. Have a read below, and enjoy our Sin-derella tales.
Year 6 had a great day at Beggar Bush on Monday, trying their hands at archery, traps and snares and bushcraft. The making of flat bread and cooking it over the campfire was a particular highlight. The staff at Beggar Bush commented on the fantastic behaviour of the children - well done Year 6 for being amazing CC ambassadors!
Last Monday, 8 of our swimmers went along to Hengrove Leisure Centre to take part in the annual swimming gala. Having held the title of winners for 5 years in a row, we were getting used to seeing the trophy everyday in our school entrance. Out of the 16 heats we took part in, we had placed 1st in 7 races along with another school! It was now down to who had secured the most second places! As the results were read out it was incredibly tense, but once again we were crowned champions and were able to bring the trophy home again. Well done children on another fantastic competition.
We look forward to welcoming the children back on
Monday 6th June
