We had a lovely calm start to the week and enjoyed yoga with Carolyn. Reception have loved continuing their learning about transport with a special visit from Chris Brown on his unicycle who answered our questions, including 'how do you get on it?' and 'how do you steer?' The children have also enjoyed reading ' A walk in London' by Salvatore Rubbino, learning all about the famous landmarks of our capital city and sorting old and new pictures. In maths, Reception have been practising their taking away skills with our pebble game. We even managed to squeeze in a 'sibling story' for younger siblings to come and join us for an end of the day story, thank you to all who came, we loved sharing our classroom with you!
Year 1 Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and Identifying Trees
This week Year 1 have been learning all about the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In Literacy we wrote reports about Brunel and worked on using full stops, question marks and exclamation marks in our work. We have enjoyed exploring our plant topic further by learning to identify a variety of garden and wild plants and deciduous and evergreen trees. We made a tally of the wild plants we spotted outside and practised counting in 5s to find which plant there was most of. We have also been learning all about deciduous and evergreen trees. We learned to identify some of the trees in our playground and looked closely at the leaves to look for clues as to whether they might be deciduous or evergreen.
Year 2 Outdoor Maths - Position & Direction
As the sun shone down in the playground, the Year Twos jumped at the opportunity to take their learning outside. They used their mathematical knowledge of position and direction to plot and record routes taken by their classmates. Lots enjoyed the challenge but commented how it felt very unnatural to move so robotically when being directed by the rest of their teammates using directional language (forwards, backwards, quarter turn anticlockwise etc).
In Literacy, Year 2 have been busy innovating a story by changing the character of the dragon in The Paper Bag Princess. In preparation for a Big Write on Monday, children have shared their ideas about Prince Ronald being whisked away by evil fairies, giant trolls, or ferocious bears. In History, the children were fascinated to learn about Mary Seacole's herbal medicines and some have already begun to compare her effort with that of Florence Nightingale's during the Crimean War.
In other news, Year 2 completed their final 'quiz' on Thursday. Wahoo! They've all worked so hard; it was a great test of their growth mindsets and although we are all feeling a little weary, their teachers have continued to feel very proud of the children's effort and resilience.
In year 3 this week, we have been getting creative with the Bristol Pound as part of the M shed ‘The Last Fish’ exhibition. The Last Fish is a shoal of over 10,000 fish created from bank notes that will appear in a forthcoming exhibition about the climate crisis at M Shed this summer. It will provide an opportunity for conversations about money, economics and the environment. We designed a variety of fish and copied our final designs onto Bristol pounds and cut them out ready to send off!
We are also very excited to be a part of the ‘Big Bristol Sing’. We had a volunteer from Bristol Beacon come to run a singing workshop with us. The children sounded beautiful and covered six songs brilliantly! The KS2 choir will represent us at the Bristol Beacon in a few weeks’ time which we are very excited for!
We were treated to a woodwind concert from some of our Year 3 and Year 5 recorder and flautists earlier this week. They were so brave, standing up and performing - some of them for the first time - in front of an audience. It seemed as if they'd all done it so many times before as they exuded confidence and finesse. Katie Lower, our woodwind peripatetic teacher, also gave a demonstration of how the flute works and played us all a beautiful piece. Thank you to everyone who took part.
Year 4 kicked off this week with a trip to Beggar Bush. Over the course of the day, they took part in archery, axe throwing, orienteering and problem solving. They all participated amazingly in their groups and demonstrated excellent teamwork.
In Music, the children composed a piece of music to accompany their Haikus about blossom. They used a range of percussion instruments and also guitars to convey the sense of the words in music. All the children performed their compositions in the outdoor classroom and we were impressed by their originality and creativity.
Have you ever fancied yourself as a news reporter? Well Year 4 certainly rose to that challenge! They made their own forecasts amd wrote a script. Then, using a green screen and iPad they delivered some enthusiastic and fact busting weather reports.
Well done for your resilience and hard work in your assessments this week!
Year 5 Geography, Computing and PE
Geography – This week the children have been focusing on the human impact on our national parks especially with regards to tourism. Looking at our closest National Park, The Brecon Beacons, the children studied some different landscapes within the park and thought about the reasons people would choose to go there before having an indepth look at Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales. We were shocked to discover that the footpath up to the peak can be seen from space. The children then looked at the problem of footpath erosion and made some fantastic posters explaining the negative impact of tourism as well as explaining what visitors could do to help reduce the erosion.
Computing – This week we have been continuing our learning about how data is transferred from the Mars Rover to earth and we learnt about the ‘fetch, decode, execute’ cycle for programming computers to recognise and complete instructions. The children then loved having a go at completing tasks focusing on really details instructions for their team mates to accomplish.
PE – Badminton serves. In PE we have been focusing on our Badminton serves. We learnt about the 4 different serves before having a go ourselves before putting them into practice with a game of Battleships.
This week, Year 5’s activity was retelling the story which follows a week in the life of Monsieur Mangetout. It uses the verb manger (to eat), it recalls the days of the week seen in Year 4, it looks at a list structure of food and it incorporates “some” (food items) as a new grammar point. The children listened to the story and followed it on a story map. After a few repetitions, the children were able to pick up the vocabulary and develop their own actions. By rehearsing and performing it in small groups, they shared strategies for memorisation as well as refining their French pronunciation. Year 5 really enjoyed adapting and presenting the story to the rest of the class.
Year 6 Bristol Pound, and First Aid
Year 6 have been working on the Bristol Pound Last Fish project in Art this week. The M shed have requested that school children around Bristol help to create an exhibition of a shoal of fish. But not just any fish! These fish will be designed on Bristol Pound notes. Here are Y6 working hard on their designs.
Year 6 have been lucky to have had a visit from Kathryn from the Red Cross this week. She led a very informative workshop on all aspects of first aid covering common scenarios and the best way that the children could react and help. From burns and scalds to head injuries and broken bones, Year 6 are now ready to be effective first aiders.
