- See you in Term 4
After a challenging term 3 it ended abruptly yesterday as storm Eunice approached the South West; we hope everyone has managed to stay safe. We have had seven successful weeks of learning and such a fabulous range of curriculum activities. We have taken time to look after ourselves and each other and hope half term is a welcome break to recharge and get ready for term 4. There are some suggested half term activities to try; Get caught Reading photos, Maths day photos, a writing competition and an invitation to apply to be a school librarian for Y4,5,6 children. The latest Families in Focus bulletin has also been sent via Szapp; it is a directory of events and services from Bristol City Council.
Please see below known dates for Term 4. We will be hosting parent/carers meetings with the class teachers on 30th/ 31st March, booking will be online and information will be sent w/c 28th February.

8th End of term 4
On Thursday 3rd March we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. We will be celebrating a range of fiction and non-fiction books, with a whole school focus on vocabulary.
Each year group has chosen some books to share. We iinvite all the children to dress up as a person, character or word linked to their year group theme.
The themes across the school are:
- Reception - People who help us
- Year 1 - The natural world
- Year 2 - Explorers
- Year 3 - Science
- Year 4 - History
- Year 5 - Geography and art
- Year 6 - Music and sport
On Google classroom we added all the information about the theme and inspiration for dressing up. This doesn't need to be a whole costume; it could be a prop but we would like every child to display their word on their costume using a label or sticker.
As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we will be including lots of reading for pleasure opportunities and celebrating 25 years of reading for all.
The World Book Day book tokens will be sent home with your child on the day. Details can be found on the back of the token and on the World Book Day website.
We cannot wait to celebrate 25 years of reading and to develop our range of vocabulary whilst exploring a range of books.
Don't forget to upload your story entry to Google classroom by Friday 25th March!
We are very excited to be taking part in the NW24 writing competition. NW24 is a network and partnership of schools in North and West Bristol, collaborating to ensure the delivery of the highest possible quality of education for all pupils.
The writing is based around a cute little creature called a Quokka. Details of the writing competition have been uploaded to Google classroom for anyone that would like to join in. We cannot wait to see your writing and to choose the winning entries that represent Christ Church in the NW24 competition.
To find out a bit more about our NW24 Teaching and Learning Partnership, see website: https://www.nw24.org/
March 14th is International Day of Mathematics 2022 and the theme is Mathematics Unites.
We will be celebrating with events in school and further details will follow. To whet your appetite, please find attached information about a photographic competition being run by the International Mathematical Union. That may be a fun activity for February half term. Details about how to enter via the web site link are on the letter posted on Google Classroom.
Happy snapping, Mrs Derrington
From the International Mathematical Union:
The theme for the 2022 International Day of Mathematics is Mathematics Unites. Let’s connect through this year’s challenge: photos with mathematics!
Take a picture of yourself (you can team up with your class, friends, family, pets, neighbours) with a mathematical thing:
- A mathematical object you built
- … or drew
- … or formed using people’s bodies
- Or maybe there’s a very mathematical building or bridge in your city
- .., or a statue of a famous mathematician
- Mathematics is everywhere, but sometimes it’s hiding, so you can also reveal it in some way
Remember that mathematics is much more than numbers:
- Geometrical shapes
- Patterns or sequences
- Formulas
- Tessellation
- Fractions
- And many other things!

You can send us your photos until March 1st 2022. We’ll share the best ones we receive in a gallery
The Get Caught Reading Challenge
In the lead up to World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March, we have set you all a challenge for over half term - Get Caught Reading!!!
The task is simple, ask an adult to take a photo of you reading. To make it more interesting, we would like you to be more creative. You could dress up for the photo. You might find an interesting location to read. You can be caught reading with family members.
When your photo is ready, upload it to this assignment. Please think about safety when you are posing for the photos.
If you have taken a group photo with brothers or sisters from school, then please make sure you enter it in all the classes, so that it counts.
There will be a prize involved;
The class with the most entries (as a percentage of the total number of pupils in their class) will earn a special trip to Waterstones in Clifton Village, where they have a voucher to choose a brand new class reading book.
For some extra inspiration, please have a look at what the adults from school did.
Good luck
Reception The Smartest Giant in Town
The final week of term has been filled with lots of creativity. The children created their own Valentines cards and made crowns inspired by 'The Smartest Giant in Town' by Julia Donaldson. We continued last week's focus on Children's Mental health and enjoyed thinking about the kind acts of the giant and animals in the story. This inspired us to think about times that we had been kind or times that people were kind to us and how this made us feel. It has been wonderful to see everyone trying their best to be very kind friends this week! Reception, we are so proud of your hard work this term. Well done!
Year 1 Shape and the Five Senses
This week in maths Year 1 have been busy learning all about shape. We have learnt the names for a variety of 2D and 3D shapes, created patterns and shape pictures, sorted shapes, carried out a shape investigation and built our own 3D shapes. In Science, we have been thinking about the five senses. We headed to the outdoor classroom where we practised our mindfulness skills and focused on each of the five senses one at a time. We closed our eyes and listened carefully to the sounds around us and then smelt, tasted and described a mystery snack- popcorn! Finally we went on a senses scavenger hunt to find objects that were rough, smooth, shiny, nice-smelling or crunchy sounding!
Year 2 Anna Hibiscus Author Visit and Tammy Kanat Weavings
This week we all felt very lucky to meet the illustrator of the Anna Hibiscus books, Lauren Tobia. Year 2 were entranced as they were shown Lauren's ideas from initial sketches to print. Lauren was kind enough to show us an unpublished book (the children were very excited to learn they were they first in the world to view it) and donate many books for the children which will be appreciated by all of KS1.
In mathematics, Year 2 learnt to interpret data using pictograms and block diagrams. Whilst in Literacy we have been writing diary entries in the role of Tobi, a boy who goes on an adventure in the rainforest. The children all worked hard to use personal pronouns and write descriptive phrases using the five senses.
At the end of the week, steady hands and focused minds helped Year 2 to produce beautiful weavings and both classes began a piece based on Tammy Kanat's inspiring work. The rain didn't deter us from our exercise and even our teachers joined in with a Valentine's day yoga session and a Joe Wick's workout! Year 2 have worked very hard during Term 3 and we hope they enjoy a well-deserved rest ready for another fun-packed term.
Year 3 Stone Age Projects and Cushions
Our week has whizzed by in year 3! Most of our mornings this week have been spent presenting the children’s Stone Age Projects to their classes. There have been such a variety of projects, which have all been so thoughtfully created and put together! They have ranged from Stone Age films and animations, to homemade costumes to lots of impressive model villages! On Wednesday, the children created their own gallery for our Year 5’s to come and look around. The year 5’s were very encouraging and wrote some lovely comments on the children’s feedback sheets.
Here is a super video of Iris’ Stone Age project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCUibgobnMk
The children were busily finishing their cushions which they have been working on for a few weeks. They look fantastic! They have really mastered applique, cross stitch and running stitch!
This week, Year 4 have been using Google Sites to design their own websites to review their favourite book. They were able to create pages, insert images and videos and add text in a range of fonts and styles with ease. As always, the teachers were very impressed with their knowledge and independence. We hope it has inspired you all to create other websites about your interests.
In Maths, we have been working hard on equivalent fractions and have made so much progress already. We have used a range of visual representations to deepen our understanding and have been looking at the relationship between the numerator and denominator to find equivalent fractions.
You've all worked so hard this term and deserve a well earned break! See you in Term 4.
Year 5 Science Investigations & Music Loops
Year 5 have had a wonderful final week of term. A week steeped in scientific investigations! We’ve been learning about forces and have focused on a different force each day. The children have undertaken the investigations with great enthusiasm and enjoyed testing their predictions during our investigations about friction, air resistance and water resistance.
Wednesday saw 5RW be invited to look at the Year 3 Stone Age project homework. The children loved giving feedback to 3ED.
In Music, we continued with our unit on Loops and remixes. We listened to Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5 and thought about what we could hear and then compared this to Walter Murphy’s modern remix ‘A fifth of Beethoven’. We then learnt the opening lines of ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ before we begin composing our own remixes after half term.
Year 6 Visible Spectrum and French Sports
In Science this week, Y6 have been considering the "visible spectrum". They learnt about Sir Isaac Newton's discoveries linked to light and made their own colour spinners to test out his findings.
In French, Year 6 started a new topic about sports. They used the bilingual dictionaries to translate the names of 9 sports in French. They then really enjoyed speaking French while completing a survey about sports and opinions . They had to ask each other: Tu aimes ? (Do you like?) le cyclisme, la boxe, le basket, le foot ... And they responded with J’aime (I like), J’adore (I love), Je n’aime pas ( I don’t like) and Je déteste ( I hate)... Not a word of English was heard during the survey - well done Year 6!

On the eve of Storm Eunice, the footballers had a calm window of opportunity, to represent Christ Church in the final football session. With skill, passion and teamwork in abundance, the girls produced an extraordinary performance. They had a perfect win ratio; Played - Four: Won - Four. Absolutely outstanding!!! Big thank you to the parents who helped with transport. Another massive thank you to Miss Barsby and Mr Curry for their continued coaching and dedication to school sport.
The Art Ambassadors are delighted that they have had so many entries to their Jubilee art competition. All entrants will be invited to a tea party hosted by the Art Ambassadors next term. Winners and runners-up will be announced during the tea party!
