Our first full week of term has gone well and the bright blue sky has lifted our spirits and helped us to have lots of fresh air. As you can see we have had lots of activities to inspire this term’s learning. The yoga sessions with Carolyn have started for Reception, Years 1 and 2 and the children really enjoy the physical and mental exercise. Year 1 had a planned visit from the fire service today who arrived in a very shiny fire engine. 6BB are swimming, the Y5/6 footballers had a successful evening at for the football league, read on to see further news.
Attendance has been fantastic and we remain optimistic that this may continue. A letter regarding our homelearning provision was sent via Szapp and Parentpay on Monday 10th January. Please do ask your child’s class teacher if you cannot access Google Classroom.
If you have siblings due to start school in September 2022 please remember tomorrow, 15th January is the last date for applications:

This week began with our very first yoga session, we loved trying new poses with Carolyn! In class, we have been learning about Antarctica. We were inspired by the story of ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ by Martin Jenkins. Reception thought about what it would be like to go on an expedition to Antarctica like the explorer Ernest Shackleton then made a list of the things we might need. We thought about the cold climate there and investigated ice, using our fine motor skills to move it with tweezers, and observing what happened when we added paint.
We’ve loved learning about penguins and what happens as they grow by thinking about the life cycle of an Emperor penguin! We’ve had lots of fun learning to ‘waddle’ and ‘huddle’ just like penguins too!
This week Year 1 have been practising their subtraction skills and learning how to find the difference between two numbers. We used Lego, Numicon and pictures to show the difference between two numbers and wrote subtraction number sentences too. In Computing, Year 1 learnt how to log into the school desktop computers and used a simple paint program to write their names, practising using a mouse and keyboard.
On Friday, the children could not contain their excitement as we were visited by the Avon Fire and Rescue Service in their fire engine. The firefighters brought in their uniform and spoke to the children about fire safety and the job of a firefighter, even reading a story - Frances the Firefly.
This week Year 2 were introduced to the continent of Africa. To begin our topic, Year 2 used IPads and Atlases to explore the seven continents and visualise sailing the five oceans. Year 2 have also been working very hard with their reading comprehension and writing. They enjoyed sharing photos of their families before writing a descriptive paragraph and painting a wonderful family portrait.
Year 3 Stone age Visit and Research
Year 3 have been very excited to begin our topic on The Stone Age. We have already learnt many fascinating facts which have wowed the children.
In History, we spent time on the iPads researching various Stone Age animals in preparation for our afternoon making Top Trump cards. Particular favourites this week have been the woolly mammoth and sabre-toothed tiger.
Another highlight was our visit from local historian, Michael Gorley. He gave us some fascinating insights into the Stone Age settlements in and around Bristol (originally named Brightstowe). The forts can still be seen next to the observatory and over in Leigh Woods. The children used a map of the land around Bristol and given different roles of a Stone Age tribe to decide where they would put their very own settlement.
Year 4 Islamic Art and Arabic Calligraphy
This week we have been busy being artists and musicians. In art we have been learning about Islamic geometric and vegetal patterns as well as looking at Arabic calligraphy. We have explored its use of shape and repetition and have experimented creating our own repeated patterns using the Islamic style for inspiration. In music, we have been learning about dynamics and ostinatos and exploring these musical terms through a range of classical and contemporary songs and orchestral pieces.
Year 5 Rivers and Liquid Nitrogen workshops
Year 5 have had a fantastic week beginning our new geography topic about rivers. The children thought about the journey of a river from its source to its mouth and learnt about the location of the River Severn. Did you know the River Severn is the longest river in Britain at 354 kilometres long? On Wednesday, Amy from the Bristol Avon Rivers Trust came in to teach us some more about our local rivers. We had maps out to investigate the River Avon and even had some river invertebrates which she collected in the morning for us to sort and classify.
In maths, we have dived into formal written methods for multiplication which the children have coped with brilliantly. Literacy has seen us adding detail to sentence starters, brackets, commas and dashes to add extra detail (parenthesis) and picking out figurative language examples used in Ice Trap…and it’s only week 2!
On Thursday Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed a visit from Badminton School Science Department. Science teacher, Mr. Williams, and six Year 10 students used liquid Nitrogen in a succession of exciting experiments. Our favourite experiment was finding out what would happen to a banana put in liquid Nitrogen and then hit by a hammer! Wow, what a fascinating morning – thank you again Badminton staff and students.

Year 6 Report cards from Mrs Ebbel and contour making
Year 6 have been learning all about decimals this week. They have been using counters and pictures to understanding all about partitioning numbers and writing as fractions and decimals.
The class book 'There’s a Boy in the Girls’ bathroom’ is going from strength to strength with both classes planning and writing a brilliant letter of advice to Jeff about his relationship with Bradley.
They have also written report cards in role as Mrs.Ebbel the class teacher- very harsh they were too!
Year 6 have also been learning about human and physical features and how they are represented on an OS map through symbols that are common to everyone worldwide. They recapped their knowledge of 4 figure grid references and extended their understanding into using 6 figures for more accuracy.
Finally they explored the ideas of contour lines on a map. These are lines that show high and low areas of land. The contour lines join up areas of the same height, and when they are close together it means the hill or mountain is steep. When they are far apart it means the land is gently sloping, or undulating.
They created a 3D model to represent a contoured feature.
With temperatures plummeting, our squads of footballers put on a fine display of performances at South Bristol Sports Centre. There were victories, draws and defeats. The most important thing was the passion and pride on offer, representing our school brilliantly.
Thank you to Miss Barsby for giving up her time to attend and coach the players. Further thanks, to our parents for helping with transport and for cheering the teams on.
