"When you first wake up in the morning, Pooh," Piglet said at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.
We have come so far and yet it still feels ‘unpredictable.’ We have managed to participate in our planned trips and activities but sadly class 4KC have had to isolate and we know how hard that is for everyone both children and adults.
Everyone is getting tired physically and emotionally and we just need to pull together to reach the end of term with good grace and a sense of pride in what we have achieved in difficult times.
We are all showing amazing resilience but it is always the time of year when emotions run high as we reach a period of transition between one school year and the next. I am currently reading all of the children’s school reports and these will be issued to parents/carers all being well by the end of next week.
There are lots of trips next week for the year groups waiting to go to Beggar Bush and years 5 and 6. Please ensure you are checking your phones each day especially before school for any last minute arrangements.
We have had another very busy week in reception. We started our week designing, cutting and sticking to make our minibeast gardens. We enjoyed making and eating our honey sandwiches. We showed our teachers our amazing spreading skills to make ladybird biscuits. They were both delicious!
The excitement this week was the emergence of some of our butterflies from their cocoons. We cannot wait to see how many we have on Monday when we come into school.
Year 1 have wowed us with all their incredible home learning this week! This week we have been thinking about what we love about our world and how we can look after it. To start the week, we used our Power of Reading book ’10 Things I Can Do to Help My World’ to get us thinking about what we can do at home to help the environment. We interviewed people at home to find out their favourite ways to help the planet and made posters for our windows showing our top tips. Then we thought about what we love most about our planet and what makes it special. We put our ideas into poems and tried to include adjectives or repetition in our work. We were so impressed with the beautiful poems and loved hearing them read out on our Google Meets. Well done Year 1!
Year 2 Art and fun at Beggar Bush
In Year 2, we had a wonderful day on Thursday at Beggar Bush. The sun was shining brightly as we set off for a fun-filled day in the forest. Firstly, we toasted some marshmallows on the fire. Then, we made bug hotels and created safe havens for animals to shelter in. We even discovered how to make music using twigs and strings! It was a lovely day spent outdoors.
'I wrote a message using twigs in the soil'- Lux, 2RD
'I learned how to make sounds just like a guitar using twigs and strings' - Isabel, 2RD
Also, this week we got creative and captured spectacular vegetable garden scenes by sketching our outline and then using watercolours to illuminate our pages. We learned more about Monet's Impressionism and how to create different light shades using the range of colours in our palette.
Well done for your magnificent co-operation and excellent teamwork this week Year 2!
Year 3 write about Theseus and the Minotaur and get ready for Sports Day
Year 3 have been working extremely hard this week, especially on their innovative myths. Having previously planned their storyline and designed their own characters, the children have written their versions of ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’. With crazy plot twists and dramatic descriptions, they are all nail-bitingly tense and thrilling to read!
In our Science lesson, the children learnt about the importance of bones in our bodies and by the end of the lesson, they could name lots of the major bones in the body. Next week, we will be learning all about muscles. Fascinating stuff!
Our yoga session this week was incredibly relaxing; the children learnt some brilliant balances and stretches which they could even show parents/carers for a little mindful moment in the morning.
We are also getting practice in for sports day this year! As we have had a year off, we thought we better brush up on our skills to win as many house points as possible!
On Tuesday afternoon, Year 4 and 5 joined a city-wide Stop and Sing concert via zoom! After weeks of rehearsing, it all paid off and the children joined in with amazing enthusiasm and effort, singing beautifully. The event was hosted by Naomi Wilkinson and there was even a live band who accompanied our singing. We loved listening to the live music and watching the talented players! There was also an extra special nomination for a lockdown hero, our very own Pastor Ruthy. It was so exciting to see her kindness and constant support for our school community being recognised on a wider platform! She really is our hero. Well done to all the children for taking part, superstars!
Year 5 Bristol Plays Music Concert and special feature for Pastor Ruthy!
This week the children in Year 5 attended the final Bristol Plays Music concert, hosted via Zoom by children’s TV presenter Naomi Wilkinson and Horfield Primary. The singing and the have a go attitude was fantastic to see and hear. The children were extremely proud when they saw Pastor Ruthy, as the school’s nominated Local Hero, appear on screen. Ruthy was one of the four people selected to be asked for interview by Naomi from all the many schools that put forward their local hero nominations! Well done too to Scarlett who put herself forward to sing a solo to ‘One Call Away’. All the children were brilliant at getting up and following Naomi’s moves for the song Power in Me, from Sing Up.
As well as this, children have shown their creative skills in DT beginning to sew a reusable shopping bag to meet the design brief of appealing to the user and holding an adequate amount of shopping. In Literacy children created news reports describing the unfurling of events in the Museum for the character’s from the text Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson and in Science the children have further explored the role of insects and weather in pollination.
Year 6 Build Boats and go to Beggar Bush
Year 6 were all at sea yesterday as they embarked on their boat building trip in Bristol Harbourside.
Under the watchful eye of the crew of ‘The Balmoral ’ and Michael from Historic England they undertook a walk around the docks to discover some of the historical facts about the creation of our beautiful dock area.
After a journey around the more inaccessible areas of the water aboard a ferry-boat the children took part in a workshop in order to build a boat that will be launched in the docks later this term.
They were guided by a group of engineers who talked to them about the STEM opportunities available to them in school and in the future world of work.
Back to the land of curiosity, adventure, and discovery: Beggar Bush! Within the safe forest school environment, Year 6 were lucky enough to delve into the world of bushcraft and practice their carving and whittling, archery, traps and snare making, and campsite bread making skills.
We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed the day!
Last Monday we had a day of music in honour of World Music Day. Then on Friday, to celebrate all the music that the children have been learning this year, we had a lovely outside concert in the sunshine. Each year group performed a French song, led by Mme. Maurier, and a variety of other pieces of music were showcased, from a whole class ukulele performance to a small choir singing 'A Thousand Years' as the grand finale! All of the staff and children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to end the week.
