October has arrived with a blustery start blowing plenty of fresh air through the school. We intend to get outside as much possible so please ensure your child as a waterproof coat every day.
As a school community we are all beginning a project based on the book by Oliver Jeffers called Here We Are-Notes for Living on Planet Earth. Each year group is focussing on a theme from the book and it is linked to the David Attenborough’s Planet Earth resources. We will look forward to sharing our learning and outcomes with you over the weeks ahead.
We will share this Friday's celebration certificates on Monday
Parents/ carers telephone calls
We have sent a Google form for Parents/Carers to complete to request a telephone call with their child’s class teacher. These calls will replace the face to face parents evening meetings usually held in term 2. Please complete the form by Wednesday, 7th October; one form per child.
On the mornings of Saturday 17th October and Saturday 7th November we will be providing an opportunity for Parents/Carers of children starting school in September 2021 to have a self-guided walk through our school building and grounds. Time slots for the visit will be allocated by contacting our school office, or through the booking form on SZapp/ new school website. This year children are not able to attend for these visits and places are limited to 2 adults per child. Please let anyone know who may be interested in this opportunity.
Please ensure the healthy snacks the children bring into school for break or in lunchboxes do not contain nuts; this includes sesame. We have children in school with severe nut allergies.
We have been creating a new school website linked to the platform that hosts Szapp so the two will be linked. Please do take a look - https://www.christchurch.bristol.sch.uk/
Please read the NHS test and trace letter passed onto parents/carers via email and Szapp
This week Year 1 have been learning about the seasons. We learnt about the changes that happen in autumn and then went on our own autumn themed scavenger hunt. We searched around the woodland area to find autumnal signs such as helicopter seeds and orange, red and yellow leaves. We've also been enjoying spotting the occasional squirrel outside our classroom window!
Year 2 have been enjoying the fabulous themes of belonging and taking care of our planet in our Power of Reading book 'Here We Are'.
During our outdoor learning lesson this week we learned the poem 'Out and About' by Shirley Hughes. It was a wonderful opportunity to create our own actions, memorise the lines and use our voices expressively to perform the poem aloud. We loved our fun art lesson when we gathered leaves outside in the woodland area and created autumnal leaf rubbings.
2RD are ready to shine! Here is our class photo in the sun. We have been settling in so well, focusing on the value of kindness and how to be a good friend to others.
Year 3 Special People, Diversity and the Universe
This week, Year 3 have loved reading ‘Here We Are’ (by Oliver Jeffers). We had some time to reflect that in this vast universe, we just happen to be sharing our lives with some very special people, so we wrote cards to them to let them know just how special they are. In Literacy, we wrote poems about diversity and thought about how each of us are different – Eloisa called it ‘The Poem of Difference’. Finally, our art project has been based on a beautiful page all about space, so we created a background with various stars, galaxies and constellations, then used watercolour paints to create our planets.
Our River Nile projects are really starting to grow now. Soon, the Egyptians will be able to harvest them and transport them down the river in boats!
Here is a class picture of 3CE’s happy faces!
Year 5's RE topic this term is "What would Jesus do?" so we have been thinking about Jesus' teaching on love and forgiveness. Last week we wrote poems based on 1 Corinthians 13 with sentence stems such as "Love is..... / Love is not....". We then looked at an American artist called Jim Dine who painted hearts in an abstract way and we studied a Christian artist called Hannah Dunnett who puts Bible verses on to artwork. We took inspiration from both these artists and wrote our poetry on to the hearts that we designed.
This week we looked at Jesus' teaching on forgiveness. We read the parable of the two debtors and the parable of the unmerciful servant and discussed what these parables can teach Christians. We moved on to discuss moral dilemmas and gave each different scenario a rating of how difficult it would be to forgive in that situation. Then we did some drama to act out the moral dilemmas.
The children really impressed us with their thoughts and the sensitive way they put forward their ideas.
