The children are settling into their new routines really well and are enjoying the start of their new ‘topics’ for the term. The teachers have prepared the Curriculum newsletters for term 1 and these are available on our school website.
We can see that Parents/Carers are supporting the children by logging into Google Classroom. This is our new platform to support with homelearning. In the first instance the teachers are posting some simple tasks to ensure that everyone becomes familiar with this platform i.e. a Reading quiz last week and a Mathletics task this week. We will be providing further detail about homework expectations for each year group within the year group information presentations that Parents/Carers will receive next week.
Reception will be staying for lunch next week – we are looking forward to welcoming then in the dining hall. Please ensure you have pre booked your child’s lunch through ParentPay.
Social Distancing on School Site
In order to support with high pedestrian routes on our school site we have opened the Reception ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ gate to be used by Reception parents/carers only and the additional side gate at the Lansdown Road entrance.
There is no longer a route from the Year 1 classes to Year 2 classes - parents/carers should loop through the woodland playground. 2KH will be the only classroom needing to come down the steps outside the classroom. I appreciate this may not be a direct route but crucially it supports more space for social distancing at drop off and pick up times.
Please also remember to remain outside of the yellow boxes at the classroom doors to allow children to enter/exit safely and for the school adults at the doors to be socially distanced.
Only essential visits should be made to the school office unless you are dropping or collecting a child. There is a box at the entrance for items to be delivered into school.
There is no doubt a cold passing around our school community. It is difficult to distinguish cold symptoms from COVID-19 - if your child has a temperature or cough, please phone your GP for advice. Please note: If your child has a temperature, cough or loss of taste or smell you should keep them at home until you have sought advice from a health professional.
Please report absence in the usual way via Szapp, email or telephone.

Testing message to pass on from Public Health England SW:
The local NHS 111 service is currently experiencing high numbers of calls from people seeking Covid-19 tests. The 111 service is not able to arrange tests and callers have to be redirected to the correct 119 number, or online service, which is frustrating for individuals and affects 111 capacity.
We would be grateful if you could remind parents seeking tests to use the correct number or website – suggested text for parent communications follows.
If you require a Covid-19 test please call 119 or visit the government website https://self-referral.test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/antigen/name Please keep trying as appointments are released throughout the day.
NHS111 are not able to arrange or advise how to obtain a Covid-19 test. If you require clinical advice about your symptoms please go to NHS111 online or call 111.
We are not keeping a central lost property collection. Please ensure you are naming all items for your child in order that these may be returned to them.
We have had an exciting week at Christ Church with the arrival of our new reading furniture, which has kick started our focus on raising the profile of reading in class and around the school. Every classroom now has modern and accessible furniture, which the children are already enjoying and making the most of. Children have volunteered to organise the shelves and have chosen which books to go on display, giving them ownership of the area. The stools also provide the perfect opportunity for small, guided reading groups and a quiet space for independent reading.
Year 2 have been enjoying their lovely new reading area. They spent time exploring new books and themes.
It is a calm space to sit quietly and discover the wonders of reading. They love the new, bright stools and shelves that add a splash of colour to our classroom.
In Jigsaw this week we learnt that we all have fears and worries. We decided that we needed a good way of coping with them by talking about anything that concerns or upsets us. We wrote our worries on our 'shiver monster' sheets and then popped them away in our worry monster pots that we made last week.
Year 2 created some stunning art pieces on Friday. They used sponges and metallic, silver paint to make freckled, speckled moths (based on our Power of Reading book 'Moth').
Year 3 Maths, History and Into the Forest!
We’ve had another busy week in 3ED! In Maths, we have been getting to grips with number lines all the way to 1000 and comparing three-digit numbers. In Literacy, we have been reading our fantastic book ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. The children decided whether it would be safer to take the shortcut through the woods or go the long way around. Next week, they will be writing a letter to the boy to persuade him the best way to go. We have been very excited about our new library furniture which arrived this week, so our book corner is really starting to take shape. We have spent lots of time outside reading under the shade of the trees.
To introduce our History topic, we pretended to be archaeologists in the Egyptian deserts and uncovered some fascinating artefacts. We talked all about who might have used them and what they were used for. We also made a human timeline in chronological order!
To immerse ourselves in our new Power of Reading book, Year 4 had a great time practising and performing The Frog Prince Continued outside using readers theatre. Everybody used their body language and voice in effective ways to retell the story, even adding a little humour where possible!
Year 4 have been practising key vocabulary with pipe cleaners and funky lettering in preparation for their character description based on the Frog Prince Continued.
In Year 5 this term our focus is painting and drawing, we will be looking at a number of famous artists. 5WB have begun their art lessons, 5HT will start in the week beginning 28th September. This fortnight we learnt all about the northern artist Laurence Stephen Lowry who is known for his oil paintings of industrial cityscapes. Lowry painted lots of people in his works but he didn’t make them very detailed. His figures were nicknamed ‘matchstick men’ due to their appearance. Last week we studied Lowry’s paintings and using our sketchbooks we copied a range of matchstick figures in different poses. This week we began reproducing one of his paintings using paint using only five colours - vermillion, ochre, black, white and Prussian blue. Next week we will complete our paintings. Here is our work so far.
Year 6 have had a great afternoon making Bristol pop art through ICT and their own imaginations
