Four Year 5 mathematicians: Kaydence, Lisa, Lawton and Ted attended a competition at Bristol Grammar School on Monday afternoon. There were many schools represented and 48 pairs of children competing. Our children remained totally focussed for 90mins solving practical and written puzzles. We are so proud of you and your positive attitude. We found out that Ted and Lawton were placed 13th overall. The children received their certificates in celebration assembly.
Mrs Richardson hosted a phonics workshop for Year 1 parents/carers on Thursday. If you were unable to attend the information will be put on Google classroom.
January has shared its wintery charm this week and we have loved the blue sky for our playtimes, please read on to see what we have been learning.

This week we travelled to the opposite end of the world, to the Arctic or North Pole! We learnt where the Arctic is and watched a lovely animation that introduced some of the animals that call it home. We discussed the vocabulary used to describe the animals and their adaptations to their habitat. On Tuesday we compared the Arctic with Antarctica. We did some lovely crafts linked to our learning on the polar regions and enjoyed exploring different activities and listening to some lovely and funny stories like Penguin Huddle by Ross Montgomery.
We have been working hard at our phonics and learning the diagraphs oo, oo, ar and or. We have been using our phonic knowledge to write captions or simple sentences to go with a picture.
We listened to the beautiful book Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo which helped us to learn the meaning of our school value, co-operation.
Music was a blast this week! We listened to a fairy tale and then acted it out together by doing the movements and actions that were set to music. All our adults were impressed by how well we co-operated.
In maths we have been busy exploring mass and capacity this week. We made predictions and then enthusiastically used the different scales both inside and in our outdoor area to weigh different items and see what was heavier and what was lighter. We discussed the idea of big things not always being the heaviest and small things not always being the lightest. Our questions and ideas really impressed our adults. To explore capacity, we enjoyed filling containers with different things and discussing if the containers were full, half full or empty.
On Friday we met with our buddies who read to us their own fairy tales that they had written! What a treat! We all were very excited and really enjoyed hearing their brilliant stories.
What a fabulous week! Well done Reception! We are looking forward to lots of lovely learning all about birds next week!
Year 1 - Numicon & African Savannahs
This week in Maths Year 1 have been learning all about numbers to 20. We have been looking at the tens and ones that make up a number and have been busy making numbers to 20 with Numicon, bead strings and base ten. Year 1 have really impressed with their number knowledge and puzzle solving skills!
In PSHE we have been thinking about how to work well with a partner. We were set the challenge of following step-by-step instructions to draw an elephant as a pair. We practised taking turns and discussed what worked well, to remember for the next time we are working in a team. In Literacy, we have used everything we’ve learned about animal groups to write reports about mammals, birds and reptiles. We are exploring our animal topic further in science lessons to find out which creatures are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Year 1 have done a wonderful job of crafting and creating an array of animals from the African savannahs this term, as you can see!
Year 2 - Owls in the night sky
In Year 2 maths lessons we have been continuing our learning on money. We have been busy counting coins and notes, comparing amounts and calculating with money. Why not test out our new knowledge by giving us some change and taking us buy a small toy or treat? Better still, we may even be able to help you with the food shopping! This week in Art lessons we used mixed media to create owls against a night sky. We hope to create owl weavings this term, so these pieces will inspire our work.
Year 3 - The challenge of division
It has been a cold one this week! We are very proud of our children this week, they have been extremely focused and willing to learn…two very proud teachers! In maths we have been tackling division, which can be a tricky subject to master. Year 3 have been fantastic and have invited challenge, pushing themselves to apply the techniques we have taught them. The progress is wonderful! We have also continued our writing based on the ‘Stone Age Boy’ and produced diary entries. Our focus has been adverbials of time, place and manner and the quality of writing has been so high, we think it could even be mistaken for year 6 work! Finally, we have continued with our Ukulele lessons and are already seeing improvements, more chords have been learnt and we are trying our first song next week, stay tuned!
In Year 4 we have been learning about the artist Vincent Van Gogh; we studied one of his most famous paintings, ‘Starry Night’. We then created our masterpieces inspired by his work, we used blue and white to create different tints of blue to create the sky swirls in the same style as Van Gogh to give a sense of movement. We then glued down a photocopy of a landscape and used pastels to create the short ‘brushstroke’ lines.
This Thursday, part two of the lunchtime Computing Club embarked on their journey into mastering the Micro:bits. We had great fun playing with and exploring the devices. The time ended with us programming our own personal name badges to introduce ourselves. The children were fantastic when faced with problems and relished the challenge. We can’t wait for next week!
Year 5 have really been enjoying their Friday morning swimming and are making fantastic progress. It's lovely to see children smiling, splashing and working hard to improve their water confidence, strokes or stamina. Well done Year 5. Keep up the good work!
Year 6 - sharing fairy tales with Reception buddies
Year 6 has had another great week. A highlight was getting together with our Reception buddies – and sharing our twisted fairy tales which we wrote earlier this term. We also enjoyed making up shared actions to retell a traditional story from Kiribati We hope that soon we will be able to perform it - know it off by heart and share it with a wider audience.
On the coldest day of the year so far, our footballers performed admirably in the second session of their league. There were some fantastic performances from all the players, and a great victory to cap it all off. It is brilliant to see the small nuggets of progress that the team is making in every game. Stay tuned for next week's update.
