We have been buzzing this week in Reception! In honour of International Bee Day we kicked off the week with everything Busy Bee!
We read ‘Nature’s Tiny Miracle, Bee’ by Britta Teckentrup and ‘Betsy Buglove Saves the Bees’ by Catherine Jacob and Lucy Fleming and we discussed why bees are so important for our planet, our adults were really impressed by the amazing knowledge we shared.
We really enjoyed learning all about bees, doing bee based activities and creative artworks. We especially enjoyed making and eating honey sandwiches! Yummy!
We were super lucky to have a very special visitor, Charlie, who gave us a wonderful talk all about bees, as he looks after approximately 60,000 of them at Five Acre Farm! We listened well to all the amazing new facts that he told us and we loved ‘The Book of Bees’ by Piotr Socha and the artefacts that Charlie shared with us. We asked some fantastic questions too and everyone had a completely Bee-rilliant time!
We can’t wait to continue our learning all about mini beasts at the start of next term.
In maths we have been learning all about odd and even numbers and how to check by making pairs. We read ‘One Odd Day’ by Doris Fisher and Dani Sneed which we really enjoyed and found very amusing! Then we had a great time working with our buddies to make an odd and even monster picture!
We wish you all a wonderful, sunny and restful half term holiday and look forward to seeing you all when we return to school for our final term of the year!
Year 1 – Victorian Schools and Making Arrays
This week Year 1 stepped back in time and explored what it was like to go to school in the past. We started by learning more about the history of our own school and we were excited to find out that Christ Church Primary was originally in the building that is now Clifton Library. We looked at photographs of our school through history, some dating from over one hundred years ago, and we worked in groups to place them in chronological order. We were impressed with how Year 1 looked closely for clues in clothing and photograph quality. We went on to look at a range of artefacts from a Victorian classroom, such as a deportment board and slates, and tried to guess what they were used for. After experiencing a snapshot of a Victorian school life, Year 1 decided they preferred school today!
In Maths this week we have been working on grouping and sharing. Year 1 have practised making arrays using an assortment of objects and have learned to write repeated addition number sentences.
1AN and 1SB both filled up the class marble jars for all their amazing efforts this term and they enjoyed a reward of some extra playtime in the sunshine. Well done Year 1! We hope you have a wonderful half term.
Year 2 - Herbal remedies of Mary Seacole
This week year 2 continued our history topic. We learnt more about the herbal remedies which Mary Seacole made and used during the Crimean War. We were amazed that we recognised some of the ingredients and they are all still commonly used today. We then compared the life of Mary Seacole with that of Florence Nightingale. We found many similarities between the stories of each, but also some important differences as well. The children have really enjoyed learning about these two influential women.
In literacy we have been innovating our own stories based on The Paper Bag Princess. What amazing imaginations our year 2 children have!
We have made it! It is the end of term 5 after a beautifully sunny week. Although tired and hot, the children have managed to display determination to complete their learning to the highest standard.
We started the week by finishing our textiles project of cushions! They look so beautiful and it was lovely to see how proud the children were of their own creations. We hope they will keep these for years to come and be able to look back on them with fond (and frustrated) memories.
Next term we will be starting a new class text so we have come to an exciting end to ‘Wild Robot’. The children have absolutely loved this story and we hope next terms text will be as successful.
Finally, we have introduced the children to money. This will be our maths topic the first week back and we’re already so impressed with their existing knowledge.
Have a wonderful half term year 3 and enjoy the sunshine!
It's hard to believe it's the end of Term 5. This week in computing, we've been busy adding finishing touches to our weather reports and uploading them onto google classroom. In Literacy, we've been designing spy gadgets and writing explanation texts, we were amazed at everyone's creativity! Finally, to celebrate National Numeracy Day, we explored how 2D shapes can make geometric patterns and create different angles and lines. Everybody loved getting creative in Maths!
Year 5 have had lots of fun in Science this week conducting a vast range of different experiments linked to ‘Changing materials’, this involved mixing different materials, separating materials, and learning different materials’ states and properties such as thermal insulators, conductors, and soluble and insoluble materials, and which changes to materials are reversible and irreversible. We also discussed whether thermal insulators had an effect on the melting rate of ice. We plotted our results on a bar chart, we learned that thermal insulators helped because they kept the cold in and the heat out; we plotted our results in a double bar chart to compare how quickly they melted and which one melted fastest.
We have thoroughly enjoyed Literacy; we wrote one-sided arguments and learned their features. We also had a homework task to do writing about a topic of discussion of our choice. Topics such as: ‘Why gaming should be part of the school curriculum’; ‘Is it ok to keep animals in zoos?’; ‘Should wearing a helmet be compulsory for hockey?’; ‘Should schools give out homework?’ and ‘Should Pokémon cards be banned in school?’ were written about. The standard of writing was extremely impressive and we enjoyed listening to each other’s work. We concluded the week with a class debate: ‘Should mobile phones be allowed in school?’. It was brilliant to hear opposing sides speak so eloquently on each point made, with arguments put across so clearly using the language of discussion.
Year 6 - Embroidery and Holidays
Year 6 had a fab afternoon, spending time with their buddies. They completed a ‘Monster’ task to work out odd and even numbers - Year 6 were very impressed with Reception’s maths skills.
We have also been busy this week finishing our embroidery projects which will be sent home to adorn your walls after half term. A big thank you to the PTA for funding the embroidery hoops for use across the school - they made a real difference to the finish pieces.
Year 6 have been busy this week thinking about going on holiday....but in French! They learnt the vocabulary for the seasons so they can talk about Summer or Winter holidays and they also had fun learning the vocabulary for items they would pack in their summer or winter suitcase. Their sentence stem was "Dans ma valise il y a..." and they particularly enjoyed saying "la parapluie" and "des bottes"! Let's hope they don't need either of those items any time soon....

Year 5 and 6 Cricket
Tuesday afternoon saw the first cricket session of the school sport season. To kick off the event, a swarm of bees made an excitingly worrying appearance. Fortunately for the batters and bowlers, our new four-winged friends found a wheelbarrow to call ‘home’.
After the danger of the bees subsided, the cricketers represented Christ Church amazingly well; they demonstrated supreme sportsmanship, great batting and bowling and most importantly they did it with big smiles on their faces.
