World Bee Day is celebrated on 20th May. On this day Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was born in 1734. The purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
We will be thinking about and appreciating these vital insects in our Monday assembly next week. See how many you can spot over the weekend!
Mrs Richardson led two meetings this week for Reception and Year 1 parents/carers. If you were unable to attend the resources are available on Google Classroom.
The photographer will be in school on Thursday, 25th May to take class photographs. We hope these will be taken outside (weather permitting), no non-uniform items to be worn on this day please. It is Y3 PE-please wear uniform and bring trainers into school.
Polite reminders
Please remember children should not be on their bikes and scooters in the playground at pick up and drop off times. These are busy times in the playground and for the safety of everyone we ask that children push their vehicles through the playground.

National Numeracy Day, fossils, sharing and an exciting story time in Reception
Wow what an action packed 5 day week we have had! We finished our dinosaurs topic by making clay fossils. We will share a photo with you next week.
On Tuesday we celebrated National Numeracy Day where we started off thinking about the maths around us. We thought of fantastic ideas about where we see numbers in our homes. The theme for the day was ‘Maths in art’ and reception enjoyed learning abut Andy Goldsworthy and focused their learning on pattern and shape. We hope you enjoy looking at some of the nature inspired art they created in the outdoor classroom.
Keeping with the maths theme we have been learning about sharing this week and have been sharing buttons between the gingerbread men both indoors and outdoors. We also had some younger visitors join us for storytime.
Our younger siblings came into school to hear ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. It was so lovely to meet so many siblings including Alice’s baby brother who arrived just in time for the event. We can’t wait for the next sibling story that will be on a Monday in June. We will share the date next week.

It was a very exciting week in Year 1 this week with our trip to the SS Great Britain. The children had an amazing time learning all about Brunel and his ship. In our workshop we helped to repair the holes in the ship using tools such as rivets and hammers. Then we got all dressed up in Victorian clothing to re-enact the launch of the SS Great Britain. We also discovered that maths can be found everywhere – even in art! We looked at Kandinsky’s work and found lots of shapes, lines and different colours. Using water colour and oil pastels, we designed and painted our own collective version of Kandinsky’s Colour Study. We’re looking forward to piecing them together and seeing it on display!
On Monday year 2 had a fantastic time on our trip to Beggar Bush. When we got there the children split into four groups. Throughout the day we moved between four activities including den building, bug hunting, making a minibeast hotel and making fire using flint and steel before roasting marshmallows on the bonfire. It was a brilliant day made even better by some beautiful weather. Well done to all of year 2 for listening to the instructors and following their instructions to keep us all safe and a big thank you to our parent helpers. As you can see from the photo's we had lots of fun!
Year 2 - Sunflowers and Fibonacci
During National Maths Day on the 16th Year 2 made sunflower weavings during their art lesson. Did you know that these giant flowers are one of the most obvious – as well as the prettiest – demonstrations of a hidden mathematical rule shaping the patterns of life: the Fibonacci sequence, a set in which each number is the sum of the previous two (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55…) found in everything from pineapples to pine cones?
What a beautiful week we have had and a very mysterious one…The children in year 3 turned detective this week as our classrooms were a crime scene! A flower destroyer attacked our classrooms and the children had the task of inspecting the parts of a flower and putting them back together to find the culprit. It was so much fun and the children were able to demonstrate amazing knowledge of plants whilst solving the crime. We also managed to finish most of the felt cushions this week so prepare to have them brighten your homes ready for the half term holiday!
In Computing this week, Year 4 have been investigating weather. They have learnt about how weather is predicted and they have looked at different websites and assessed their reliability. Next week they will be writing and presenting their very own weather reports using green screen technology! Well done to everyone for giving 100% to your assessments this week.
National Numeracy Day saw us use our area knowledge to create some incredible artwork. Mrs Rowe asked us to create rectangles that had an area of 20 cm squared before constructing our artwork. Measuring skills were seen and we are really pleased with our results.
In Geography this week we analysed some information about Dartmoor National Park and The Everglades National Park and were able to compare and contrast the landscape, geographical features, and visitor attractions. Did you know it costs $10 to enter the Everglades and there are only 3 roads that cross the entire park?
In French, we have been working towards a short piece of creative writing which we will present to the class. This week we watched ‘Boucles d’Or et Les Trois Ours’ (Goldilocks and the three bears) and were surprised at how many sentences we could translate.
In Science this week we have been comparing and grouping everyday materials according to their properties. We constructed Carroll diagrams to classify materials and we also labelled an everyday item explaining the materials it used and what their properties are.
Year 6 celebrated National Numeracy Day this week by combining Art and Maths. They learnt how to draw parabolic curves using the x and y axis and then explored further by drawing them on different quadrants to create patterns. They did a fantastic job; some added colour and the finished articles were amazing!
