After the buzz of the Coronation celebrations at the end of last week in school, this week we have had the formality of our Year 6 children completing their statutory assessments. The children began each day with a SATs breakfast to settle themselves before the start of the day. They have approached the week with a super ‘can do’ attitude and really deserved their trip to the park on Friday afternoon. Thank you to the staff team who have prepared and supported the children on their SATs journey.
RRP enjoyed beautiful sunshine for their trip to Belmont Estate on Thursday. Our programme of trips to Beggar Bush starts again on Monday 15th May - it’s Year 2s turn and then Year 6 on 22nd May.
It is National Numeracy day on Wednesday 17th May. Each year group will be investigating how number can be represented in Art there are plans to be inspired by Kandinsky, Andy Goldsworthy, Mehndi patterns, tessellations, parabolic curves- we will share our findings with you.
Our OFSTED visit has caught the eye of The Bristol Parent online magazine - visit bristolparent.co.uk to read the article written by the editor.

Reception - Dinosaurs, doubling and Alison Hubbling in Reception!
These short weeks do nothing to stop the cogs of learning turning in Reception! All the children were able to write a caption about the newly crowned King Charles the third and some rose to the challenge of writing their ideas with the sentence starter ‘If I were King…’ or ‘If I were Queen…’.
Continuing our dinosaur fact finding mission the children have been thinking of their own questions to find out more specific facts about our scaly predecessors. E.g. How fast can a dinosaur run? They have been looking at the teeth of different dinosaurs to see if they were used to cut, tear, grind or whether they had any teeth at all!! There were some really tricky dinosaur activities out in provision which tested our fine motor skills by cutting and assembling a skeleton correctly.
In maths we have enjoyed learning how to double numbers using dinosaurs in a mirror – ‘dino doubles’, doubling spots on the butterflies wings with paint and listening to ‘The story of Alison Hubble – who went to bed single and woke up double’ by Allan Ahlberg and Bruce Ingam.
On Thursday it was RRP’s turn to go to Belmont Estate to enjoy the great outdoors! The sun was shining and the children fully enjoyed their woodland activities. They were even lucky enough to meet one of the cow’s new calves that had been born that very morning. Keep checking Google classroom for a power-point showing all the best moments from this trip. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the adult helpers who came with us – we appreciate your time and support.
This week Year 1 used the story maps that they had drawn earlier in the term to retell the story of Orion and the dark. Miss Noble and Miss Beck have been blown away by the amazing writing the children have produced!
In Science we have been learning about the difference between garden and wild plants. We went on a hunt in our very own playground, using a tally chart to record the number of wild plants we could find which ended up being lots! We even spotted some garden plants such as lavender. Our nasturtiums shot up over the bank holiday weekend so Year 1 have been incredibly enthusiastic about tending to them.
In maths we have been measuring capacity using non-standard units such as cubes and cups of water. We then used the equality symbols to compare the capacity of two containers. Well done to everyone for another busy week in Year 1!
This week Year 2 have been continuing to learn about the work of Florence Nightingale. We’ve been comparing hospitals now to what they were like during the Crimea War and we are very grateful to be alive now! We pretended we were Florence Nightingale and wrote a persuasive letter to try to get the things needed such as clean bandages and fresh bedding to improve the hospitals in Scutari.
In maths we are continuing to become confident at telling the time. We’re going to finish this learning soon so we need to keep practising at home!
In our music lesson we have been recognising different instruments that we have spotted whilst listening to an orchestra. Some of them were quite unusual!
Year 3 - Textiles and Ukuleles!
This week has been a particularly fiddly week for the year 3’s! We continued honing our sewing skills and have started to make our cushions. Each child is making their own felt cushion using applique and cross stitch to decorate. The children are loving designing and creating their own textile pieces, even with the frustration of threading needles and getting in a tangle! We are extremely proud of the children’s ongoing patience and concentration with this project.
Our other fiddly project has been the start of our Ukulele lessons. We have a tutor from Bristol Music Project coming every Tuesday to help teach the children. As you can imagine, the fingerings, chords and rhythm is a lot of pick up but we are looking forward to the progress year 3 will undoubtedly make.
Year 4 - The Glorious Science of the Digestive System!
Year 4 have continued to learn about the digestive system this week. We conducted a pretty gruesome experiment to demonstrate how food passes through the body. Using baked beans and biscuits we tracked the journey of the food from the mouth (a bowl with our fingers acting as the teeth chomping and cutting with water acting as saliva), down the oesophagus into the stomach (a sandwich bag with a little orange juice added for the stomach acid which we squeezed to mimic stomach muscles contracting), into the large/small intestine (tights which the food travelled along and liquid was able to pass through). The children were then able to observe that some food is absorbed into the body as nutrients, while some of it ends up as poo.
Year 5 - Loops, Remixes and Pop Art
In Year 5, this week has seen us focusing on balanced arguments. We have thought about creating detailed arguments for and against different topics such as ‘Chocolate is unhealthy and should be banned’, ‘Zoos should not be allowed to keep animals captive’, ‘School should be optional’, ‘Parents should let children climb trees’ and ‘Children should be allowed to vote’ and identified the features of balanced arguments before writing our own.
Music has seen us continue our ‘Loops and Remixes’ unit. We listened to a remix of ‘The Lion King’ before composing our own loops using ‘Chrome Music Lab’.
In Art we continued our work on Andy Warhol, we drew out our designs onto Styrofoam boards, then printed out our designs in different colours. The process was quite tricky and we are incredibly proud of our results. We think Andy Warhol would be very impressed at how eye-catching our designs are and how we have incorporated everyday items from popular culture in 2023. We have really enjoyed this POP ART unit!
KS2 Choir and the Bristol Beacon Summer Sing
This week, KS2 choir spent an hour with Mr Croughan from Bristol Beacon, learning some of the repertoire for their forthcoming Summer Sing event. They did some fun warm-ups and then worked incredibly hard learning a song in Polish, a song in Somali and a song in Arabic. Mr Croughan confirmed that the children were amazing and the choir can't wait to perform in June (details to follow). Well done choir - keep playing those songs on repeat...they're on Google Classroom so your families can join in too!

Campfest - 7-9th July
Year 6 have worked their socks off this week - cracking through their SATs papers with drive and enthusiasm. We are so proud of the manner in which the children have conducted themselves, but please, Year 6, we want you to remember that:
SATs don't measure sports,
SATs don't measure art,
SATs don't measure music,
Or the kindness in your heart.
SATs don't hear your laughter.
Or notice how you've come this far,
SATs are just a tiny glimpse,
Of who you really are.
We have topped off our week by getting stuck into our new embroidery project, where we have started to sew the grass, lavender and roses onto our calico. Check back next week to see how our finished designs look once we add a variety of other flowers and insects onto them!
