Year 5 have been to Kilve Court this week for their residential camp. Fortunately, the weather did not disrupt their fun in the outdoors. There is a tile on Szapp if you would like to see the children in action. The staff report the children have been fantastic and a pleasure to be away with. A huge thank you to our staff team for facilitating this opportunity.
Schoolzine updated Szapp over last weekend, so you will need to delete the green Szapp tile and re-install the new red tile. Instructions to re-register:

It has been a truly ROARSOME week in Reception! Not only did Chris Brown come in at the start of the week to demonstrate his balance and poise on a unicycle but Reception received an important letter from Mrs Jones explaining that a strange box had been found in the outside area!! RRP and RLB were of course straight onto it finding a giant egg inside and then the questions began as to what they thought might hatch! The children will keep you posted.
The children have been finding out what the words ‘herbivore’ and ‘carnivore’ mean and read the book ‘How to look after a dinosaur’ by Jason Cockcroft. (Hint, Hint). They have also been talking about timelines and thinking about when and where events would be placed.
On Wednesday we were really lucky to have two special visitors in school to tell Reception all about how to look after their teeth, mouth and gums. It was great fun and all the children received a dental goody bag to keep those smiles sparkling!
.
In maths we have continued to look at numbers beyond 10 by ordering and finding missing numbers to 20 either using a washing line or making ‘teen towers’ out of cubes.
Reception have loved the start of their ‘Jurassic Journey’ and have fully enjoyed all the ‘dino-tastic’ activities that were on offer in their classrooms.
Both classes are really looking forward to their ‘Butterfly workshop’ on the Downs next Thursday. Please check with the office if you think you have not completed the Google form to allow your child to attend this outdoor learning experience.
Year 1 – Planting seeds and Making bees
The sun shone for Year 1’s forest school session with Milly in the outdoor classroom this week. We learned about pollinators in spring and made some lovely little buzzing bees using pine cones and wool. Year 1 also enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the fire.
In Science we have continued our topic about plants. This week we planted nasturtium seeds and we are looking forward to watching them grow! We also learned about the different parts of a plant and the jobs that they do. We looked closely at the bulbs we were studying last week and drew and labelled the stem, leaves, roots and flowers.
In maths we have explored measuring length and height and have practised measuring in centimetres using a ruler. Well done for all your super work this week Year 1!
What a very wet week it has been! We went into week 2 full of excitement for forest school at Beggar Bush…unfortunately, this ended up being on the wettest day of the year! The children were INCREDIBLE considering just how wet we got. They kept up morale and ploughed on with the activities. We are looking forward to our second visit in June.
To stick with the wet theme, we began ‘volume and capacity’ in maths. We took this outside and enjoyed water play with beakers jugs and funnels, exploring units of measure, volume and capacity. Now it is time to dry off ready for next week!
Marshmallows, jewellery making and games in the sunshine? Yes please. Year 4 had an absolute blast in their forest school time this week where we learnt more about the natural environment around us.
The children also enjoyed a delicious end to their Design and Technology project – biscuits! After several weeks of evaluating, planning and taste-testing, the children were ready to bake and decorate their products. And, as you’d expect, there are only crumbs as proof!
Friday 28th April:
Packing went smoothly this morning and soon rooms were cleared and we were all sitting in the dining room eating a scrumptious breakfast of cereals, croissants or pain au chocolat. Having heard tales of other group’s experiences yesterday – the groups eagerly headed off with their new instructors to their destinations: the climbing wall, mountain biking or grass sledging. The morning whizzed by in the bright sunshine and soon we were back in the dining hall eating lunch and sharing stories of it all. Everyone agreed that they had had the BEST TIME EVER at Kilve.
Thursday 27th April:
An early start for some, eager at the prospect of the activities ahead, Year 5 busied themselves in their rooms getting ready for the 8.30 am call to breakfast. A choice of cereals, toast, and a hot breakfast meant that all of Year 5 left the dining hall full and ready for our morning activity of ‘Wide Games’.
Again, the weather was on our side and so we started games of Tug of War, with even the staff joining in. Next, it was ‘Capture the Flag’, ‘Zombie Tag’, and a huge game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, followed by problem-solving activities such as ‘The Artist and Sculptor’ and who could make the longest line: the girls or the boys?
After a well-deserved drink and snack, it was back to more team games, the sounds of victorious cheers, happy laughter, and screams of delight echoed around Kilve Court.
An unforgettable afternoon! At the start, it may have been drizzling a little but it did not dampen the enthusiasm. The children did a range of activities, including low ropes, mountain biking, and grass sledging. They demonstrated amazing cooperation skills in low ropes and it was great to see them all supporting each other through each obstacle. In mountain biking, everyone was able to challenge themselves and it was brilliant to see their resilience. In grass sledging, we whizzed down the hills like dynamite and slalomed through cones with precision.
After a roast chicken dinner, we headed to the maze for some a-MAZE-ing games. The children loved getting lost and the sense of reward at finding the middle of it was fantastic. Our final evening at camp ended on a real high, well done Year 5!
Wednesday 26th April:
The sound of happy chatter from 41 excited Year 5 children was broken when the Kilve Court Activity Centre sign was spotted and an enormous cheer rang out across the coach, followed by applause. Greeted by a member of staff. everyone bundled off the coach, grabbed bags, bedding, and boots, and headed to the library.
Our briefing began soon after, starting on the front lawn in front of the grand and beautiful building of Georgian mansion, in the stunning backdrop of the Quantock Hills. We were given a guided tour of the house, the dining hall, drying room/cellar and told our room allocations. Staying in the house itself, we lugged our bags up the grand staircase leading to each corridor and our large dorms. With plenty of available bunks in each room, decisions were made quickly and unpacking began.
Soon it was time for lunch and as the sun was shining, that meant a picnic lunch on the grass followed by free time on the front lawn.
After lunch, we all headed off to Kilve Beach, where we found fossils, explored rockpools, and more. We found plenty of ammonites, and shouts of finds echoed across the group.
On arrival back at Kilve we had a well-earned drink of squash and a snack, then headed off to our dorms for more unpacking and a room inspection, followed by free time on the front lawn. A delicious dinner of spaghetti bolognese or macaroni and garlic bread followed by doughnuts at 6.00pm was hungrily devoured.
Our evening activity was Cluedo, which involved completing tasks and answering challenges given by the suspicious characters located around the grounds in order to be given clues. Mr Curry, in full-length dress, made a wonderful Princess Mary! After that, tired but happy, we had a hot chocolate and headed to bed.
Year 6 - Algebra and Connections web
This week in PSHE Year 6 have been thinking about mental health: what it is, what can challenge it and what can support it. We've had some really interesting and thoughtful discussions. We've also considered the behaviours we might see when someone is struggling and talked about what kind of help / advice we would offer. We started our session on Monday by creating a "connections web". We thought about how we are all connected to one another in some way - either by wearing the same clothes; having the same eye colour; liking the same things....all sorts! Here's the 6BB connections web.
Year 6 have been enjoying their first incursion into the wonderful world of algebra this week. From beginning with cubes and pictures, they have built up their understanding to be able to write simple algebraic expressions and equations. Well done Year 6!
