- News from the PTA
This week Mr Campbell and The Agency launched The Big Walk and Wheel challenge. It was great to see more children walking, all or part of, their journey to/from school and using scooters and bikes. Fewer cars in the roads around our school will make it safer and healthier for everyone. Reception had a special ‘wheels’ workshop in our playground on Wednesday morning; it was so much fun, take a look at the film to see.
The outdoor activities continued with Year 1 walking to the Downs for a Wildlife of The Downs workshop, whilst Year 5 and 6 had their wildlife workshop in our outdoor classroom. Years 2, 3 and RLB participated in a forest school workshop in our outdoor classroom. We managed to dodge most of the showers but not all of them!
It was National Poetry day on Tuesday, we all enjoyed listening to poems in class.

Reception - Busy Spring, Nature Wakes Up
We sprung into spring in Reception this week! We put some new life into our learning choices that were full of flowers, bikes and beans!
We read the book 'Busy Spring, Nature Wakes Up' by Alex Morss and Sean Taylor and looked at non-fiction books about spring. Together we learnt about when spring is and what happens during this lovely season. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the planting activities we had outside and in our classrooms and we loved exploring the real spring flowers. We also were engaged by counting beans as part of our maths consolidation week.
Yoga with Carolyn began for us all on Monday and we were fantastic at listening and trying our new poses. Our adults thought we were brilliant and everyone agreed that yoga is a fantastic way to start the week. We cannot wait for our next lesson!
We have continued our cookery for the whole school as part of our Eat Them to Defeat Them challenge so that everyone can try some healthy veg filled delights. This week our groups made coleslaw. Yummy!
RLB had their spring workshop in the outside classroom on Tuesday. We were lucky enough to dodge the downpours and had a wonderful time learning some campfire safety, making lovely fir cone bees and of course toasting marshmallows, delicious! Both classes are really looking forward to more outdoor learning next week.
Also on Tuesday it was World Poetry Day and we were very engaged and amused by some lovely and funny poems that our adults shared with us. We may have even started learning one! We have also continued to work hard with our own writing and impressed our adults with our phonic knowledge.
Wednesday was Wheels Circuit Day and we had a wonderful time riding our bikes and scooters around the circuit that Mr Campbell kindly set up for us in the playground. Our adults were so impressed by our determination, kindness and how well we all worked together that both classes were awarded a co-operation values certificate. Well done!
Continuing along that theme of bikes we read Frank and Bert: The one where Bert learns to ride a bike by Chris Naylor Ballesteros and learnt about bikes through history. We had some super ideas for what bikes of the future will look like!
Wow! What a busy week it has been! Well done everyone! We cannot wait for all our Easter learning next week!
Year 1 - Spring trip to the Downs
This week in Year 1 we have been very fortunate to have not one, but two experiences with the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project. We had a visitor come to school early in the week who shared with us how we can use our senses to recognise when spring has arrived. The children scoured the playground for signs of spring using their sense of sight, touch, hearing, and even smell! On our much anticipated trip to the Downs, the children learned all about how birds keep busy in the spring time. We listened to the songs of different birds, what they eat and even the struggle for survival that some wildlife faces before they’ve even hatched! In art, the children studied the work of Claude Monet and had a go at creating a piece of Impressionist artwork. We used cotton buds to imitate Monet’s bold brush strokes when painting their own depiction of Monet’s garden. We can’t wait for you to see the final outcome!
Year 2 and Year 5 Art Collaboration
This week saw our Year 5 pupils come into Year 2 classes and spend 30 minutes helping them with their DT pouches. Fantastic discussion, patience, and collaboration from everyone; really well done all, we are so proud. Year 2 - your resilience skills have totally paid off - your pouches look very impressive. Thank you again Year 5, Year 2 really loved working with you.
As well as the fabulous sewing creations Year 2 completed this week, we also had a wonderful time doing our Forest School activities. We started by whittling sticks using vegetable peelers and then using these to toast our marshmallows. We also made wonderful bumblebees by wrapping a pinecone with yellow and black wool and using white netting for the wings.
We are really proud of the lovely creations we have made this week!
Year 3 - Spring and Healthy Me
Spring has sprung at Christ Church! We managed to dodge those spring showers to enjoy our first outdoor workshop of the year. We love to take learning outside in year 3 and this was the beginning of many. The children enjoyed whittling, toasting marshmallows, tree properties and creating wooden jewellery. It was lovely to see the children so engaged and enjoying our outdoor classroom.
We have also had a week of our latest PSHE module ‘healthy me’. We explored kilojoules, calories and how to keep ourselves as healthy as possible. We researched food packaging, fitness plans and the amount of sugar in our favourite snacks. So watch your cupboards, the sugar police are investigating!
Year 4 - Why are jungles so wet and deserts so dry?
In Year 4 Geography this week it has been all about maps! As part of our enquiry, 'Why are jungles so wet and deserts so dry?' we begun by looking at maps which showed the climate in the UK in winter and summer and also annual rainfall. We compared how different the climate was even within a small country like the UK. Then we went on to compare the climate and rainfall around the world. We observed that many factors, such as latitude and longitude and land mass and proximity to an ocean, affect the climate and annual rainfall in different countries. We used keys to collect data and recorded our findings in tables.
Year 4 glazed pots look fantastic; we are so lucky to have a school kiln.
Year 5 - British Sign Language and Food Chains
To celebrate British Sign Language Week Year 5 explored various forms of non-verbal communication and learned some British Sign Language. We learned greetings such as hello, good morning/ afternoon/evening, and goodnight. We learned how to say: How are you? thanks/ please, sorry, and goodbye. We also learned how to fingerspell each letter of the alphabet so we could sign words that do not have a sign, such as names, and discussed that for words you do not know the sign for we can spell out the word using the BSL fingerspelling alphabet. We spelled our own names; other names of people in the class; then progressed to random words and phrases. We finished the lesson playing a fingerspelling challenge achieving an impressive result.
This week we enjoyed a Downs Workshop; our visitor Anna helped us learn more about food chains and how plants and animals get their energy. We discussed how a food chain always starts with a producer, which is an organism that makes its own food. We learned that most food chains start with a green plant because plants make their own food by photosynthesis. We discussed primary and secondary consumers. We collected organisms around the grounds and discussed their potential role in a food chain.
Y6 enjoyed their composition lesson in music this week as they composed a soundtrack to accompany a Wallace and Gromit film. Each group was given a word to represent a different scene and they were tasked with composing a suitable piece. For example, one group was given the word "danger", while another had "chase". The children worked brilliantly in their groups and used graphic score notation to help them remember their compositions, ready to perform alongside the film, next week.
On Tuesday afternoon, Chris Brown from Christ Church, came in to speak to Y6 about Christian funerals. The Y6 RE topic this term looks at what different religions say when life is hard. During the lesson with Chris, the children read the poem "Heaven" by Steve Turner, thought about his interpretation of Heaven and then listened to Chris speak about why funerals can be comforting to Christians. He spoke about the symbolism and format of a funeral and many of the children reflected that the session gave them time to formulate their own thoughts. Thank you Chris for coming in to help us with this topic.
On Thursday afternoon, 6 of our netballers headed off to take part in a netball competition held at Merchant’s Academy. After winning all of the matches in our pool (without out conceding any goals may I add) we soon made it into the finals. It was a valiant effort, with our girls performing incredibly well, which saw us secure the silver medals. Now we await confirmation as to whether or not we have made it through to the county finals. Well done girls - super individual performances all round.
A big 'well done' to all those children who entered the Easter poetry competition organised by the Worship Council. Some valuable House points have been earned!
After narrowing down the poems to just four finalists, the eventual winner chosen by Pastor Ruthy and the Worship Council was Sophie, 2CB. Her poem captured the true meaning of Easter and rhymed cleverly throughout. Sophie's poem can be heard during our Easter service next Thursday held at the church and she also received an Easter egg for her winning entry.
A new certificate arrived on the table in today's Celebration Assembly - The Superstar Reader Award. We are so proud of Zaiyann for all his effort. Well done to Miss Cator for all her reading inspiration she is offering her class.
Get Caught Reading Champions 2023
A huge well done to 1SB for their supreme performance to earn the title of Get Caught Reading Champions 2023. Their prize is a visit to Waterstones, to pick a brand-new class book.
Have a look at this short clip below of their highlights. Thank you for all the submissions across the school, and thank you to parents/carers for your support.
