This year Christ Church will be taking part in The Big Walk and Wheel, as part of The Agency's Mission Cl.A.S.S. The challenge runs from Monday 20th March until Friday 31st March.
During this time, the Super Agents will be tracking how our children travel to school each day;
- Walk (parking 5/10 minutes away and walking the rest counts)
- Scoot
- Cycle
Remember we want our children to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in our streets and discover how these changes benefit our environment.
Reminder - please, please do not drop off/pick up on the streets immediately outside school. It is making our streets less safe. Our partners from Avon and Somerset Police have been back out again to help.
Thank you
The Agency

Reception - All aboard for travel and Spring!
What a busy yet exciting couple of weeks for Reception! RRP got to put their railway safety knowledge into practice by boarding a train from Clifton Down station to Severn Beach. (RLB you will be doing this on the 19th April) We were so proud of your listening and behaviour during this trip. Our transport topic continued this week with finding out about all the different forms that can be found in London and this was extended by exploring landmarks that can be found in the capital city.
We read the books ‘The Naughty Bus’ by Jan Oke and then ‘A Walk in London’ by Salvatore Rubbino to help us with our writing when labelling a bus and making our own mini books about London.
At the end of the week we found out what one of our favourite bears got up to in London – Paddington of course!
In Maths we have been sorting, matching and exploring 3-D shapes - including cylinders, cuboids, spheres and cones and then trying to find real life examples in the classroom.
We explored what happens during Holi – the festival of colours and why Hindus celebrate it. We heard the story of Holika and Prahlad and how good overcame the bad king. This was great fun ending with a scarf dance to safely replicate the powder paints being spread everywhere as the coloured scarves fell over our heads!
Eat them to defeat them – we certainly did that when we made and then tried ‘pea hummus’ in both classes. Yum!
Class RRP had a Spring workshop led by Milly in our outdoor classroom and in the sunchine! The children learned about the importance of Bees, then made their own bee using pine cones and wool. We ended the session of course with toasted marshmallows. Class RLB have a turn on Tuesday 21st.
Year 1 sprung into action this week when writing questions to help find out everything they want to know about spring ahead of our workshop. We used our topic book Busy Spring to formulate some incredibly curious questions, including ‘which flowers bloom in spring?’ and ‘why is spring called spring?’. As the workshop was postponed we hope to have all of our questions answered next Monday, but in the meantime we decided to bring spring inside. Year 1 were busy crafting nests from twigs and grass, making sure to keep the fragile eggs inside safe.
In maths we worked on finding the difference between two different quantities and used this to help with subtracting numbers within 20. They did really well with this and will now be moving on to numbers within 50.
Finally, in PE we have been developing marching skills and greatly improved at keeping in time to the music.
Well done Year 1!
Year 2 had their last yoga session with Carolyn this week. We talked about the many different breathing techniques that we have learned over the last 8 sessions. We also got creative by combining 2 yoga poses that she has taught us to create new ones. We had fun naming our new poses!
This week we have also become aliens! We cut photos of ourselves in half and drew what we felt our alien-self would look like. The pictures were fabulous and we’re looking forward to explaining more about them when we do our descriptive writing later this week.
As it has been science week this week, we started our ‘Rocks and Soil’ topic. As ever, the children were scientific sponges and soaked up so much knowledge! We looked at rock samples and categorised them into igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary and man-made. We then went outside to inspect the schools soil! We learnt about the 4 processes in which soil is made and why it is so important to our environment. We have lots much to explore on Friday making fossils and exploring the process. Great work year 3!
Year 4 - Clarice Cliff clay work
In Year 4 art lessons, our unit is clay containers. In our most recent lesson, we learned about the work of Clarice Cliff, when she lived, how and why she became famous and discussed the line, colour, and pattern of her pottery. We learned how to make a coil pot and in our sketchbooks, we created our own pottery designs inspired by Clarice Cliff’s work.
Year 5 - Land of the Dead, and Spring Workshops
In Year 5 computing we have recently been creating code on the Micro:bit to turn it into a polling device. We selected variables to ask ‘yes/no/maybe’ questions and we were able to see the data. In History lessons, we compared the similarities and differences between the city-states of Athena and Sparta. Once we had created a Venn diagram to show our comparison, we then had a vote to say if we had lived in Ancient Greece where we would live. Sparta won by 17 votes to 5.
In DT lessons, our focus this term is food and nutrition. We have discussed the Eatwell Plate and examined the roles of the different food groups and the proportion of each needed for a healthy, balanced diet. We modified four recipes, identifying four ways to increase the fibre content using by choosing wholewheat pasta, brown rice, or whole oats and increasing/ adding fruit, vegetables, or lentils. We enjoyed making bread this week.
We had a fantasticspring workshop in the outdoor classroom this week – we learned new facts and skills, toasted marshmallows and crafted a necklace.
In Literacy, inspired by our Land of the Dead chapter in The Adventures of Odysseus, we wrote our own performance poems. We then worked in small groups to record ourselves in front of a ‘green screen’ and worked with iMovie to add effects. We are very proud of the results.
Land of the Dead – performance poem (using Green Screen to record)
Words by Esther, Sophia, Dougie and Ban
Living:
The wall of fog stretched from the sea to the sky,
Chards of ice hung from the ice and rigging,
The endless dank gloom surrounds us on all sides
As we wade through the sea we cannot see
Dead:
Who dares enter our solitude,
Our realm of many guests,
The land of the dead
Who crosses the land of our lives?
Living:
We watch frightened, rooted to the spot
The dead people approach moaning and hissing
The ghosts of the dead were coming
Drawn by the wind and sacrifice
Young brides with gaping gashes and gurgling children
Dead:
These disgusting creatures dare to enter our haunted home.
Our realm is not for the breathing lungs of a human
We are drawn by the bloody, drooling sacrifice
To grant us the memory of our lives which are lost in the void of time
Living:
We stare stuck to the spot
Paralysed as ghosts creep forward
Drawn by the smells of our sacrifices
Dead:
We advance muttering below our breath as we felt curiosity and anger rise in our veins.
Our empty souls raged for memories
We long for the mirror-like pool of blood.
Invaders.
Be gone your foolish existence is nothing here in the mighty land of the dead.
Year 6 - Maths Lungs and Blood
Year 6 have been working on ratio and proportion problems in Maths. We used an app called 'thinking blocks' to help us visualise how to use the bar model to solve the problems. Miss Barsby and Mrs Brown have been blown away by the children's abilities to solve incredibly complex questions - why not see if you can solve one the one below!
The ratio of Chloe's crayons to Emma's crayons was 6:1. Chloe gave half of her crayons to Emma. She then had 8 fewer crayons than Emma. How many crayons did Chloe have at first?
Year 6 have called in the experts over the last two weeks!
We have been learning all about the circulatory system and how our heart and lungs and blood work together to keep us alive and healthy.
Dana’s Dad came and told us all about his work at the BRI and how he was able to help people who had problems with their heart. He explained how stents and artificial valves could be used to prevent and treat heart attacks. It was fascinating.
Sophia’s Mum then came in to explain all about the function and structure of the blood. She talked about how blood is made and how sometimes there are diseases of the blood that can be treated in hospital.
Thank you so much to them both for coming in to share their knowledge and expertise with us all. I’m sure they have inspired many future doctors!
