Our school numbers doubled for our World Book day celebrations at Christ Church on Wednesday, as we welcomed bears and cuddly animals. We hope the bears enjoyed sharing the day with us. We all agreed how very well behaved they were during the story time and hot chocolate. Our theme was bears in honour of Paddington’s 65th Birthday, please read on to see what we got up to.
Last Friday’s PTA Disco was a huge success and a most enjoyable event for the children. Thank you to our PTA for organising it and the many parents/carers who supported during the event.
The next evening for your diary is the PTA quiz evening on Friday, 24th March.
Health and Safety audit
We had a planned health and safety review this week commissioned by our insurers. Whilst we wait for the full report I would just like to share that it was very positive and reflected the diligence of our school business manager, Tamara Jordan and site supervisor, John Ford. Health and safety is everyone’s business, we have a well-managed building and site and a community that supports this, including our Governors, external advisors and contractors. Our children learn about risks and why is it important to have rules and boundaries to keep us all safe. As you are aware our super agents are working on safe journeys to/from school. However, there are a few concerns to raise…
Polite reminders:
Car Park
For the safety of everyone and as part of our planning conditions our school car park is only to be used by staff, visitors who have booked a space and anyone with a blue parking badge. It should not be used unless agreed with the school office. It is not to be used for drop off/pick up of children for breakfast/after school club. Unfortunately, not everyone supports this requirement and therefore we will be closing the gates to prevent entry. Our neighbours will be reporting drivers who obstruct their property.
Dogs
Dogs are not allowed into the playground. Dogs are not to be tied to fences within our school site and/or left unattended. If you are leaving your dog outside our school site please do not leave it directly at the entrance. Some children are nervous of dogs and concerns have been raised about how upsetting it can be for children to have to walk through a group of dogs in order to get into school.
Online booking is now closed for parent/carers meetings with the class teachers on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th March. Please ask the school office if you need support with booking an appointment or contact the class teacher directly.
Marketing photos in school - on Monday 13th March we will be having a photographer to take some marketing photos of the school for us, and the children at work and play during the school day. We are sharing this opportunity with one of our suppliers - ParentPay - who would like some photos of the school operations that their service enables. If your child would be likely to be in one of these photos that ParentPay would use, we will be contacting you early next week for consent.

Worship Council Easter poetry competition
Did somebody say Easter poetry competition? Yes, they did! The Worship Council is currently running an Easter poetry competition for all pupils to enter.
For further details on how to get involved see posters around the school or find one of the Worship Council members or Mrs Petters for further details.
Each person gets 5 house points and the eventual winner will get an Easter egg and their poem read out during the school Easter service in church!! Last entries on Monday the 13th of March.
We welcomed PC Burstow and PCSO Baali to Christ Church to meet the Super Agents. They watched our amazing advert for Mission Cl.A.S.S and they want to be part of our goal to make our school streets safer and greener. They shared ideas for how they could help. One of their ideas is to come and do regular patrols at drop off and pick up – they even said the Super Agents can join.
I think we can say that the police are our first ever Agency Partners, and will take their place on our display, in school. We look forward to sharing more news about this awesome partnership.
And remember, show you care and park elsewhere.
VegPower started this week, with Butternut Squash and Tomatoes in the spotlight.
Tomatoes were presented in a super tasty salsa, created by our Reception Chefs – well done. Thank you to Mrs Richardson and the adults for their expert tutelage.
Next week we have a trio of vegetables, to take centre stage;
Carrots / Peas / Pepper
Don’t forget to scan the QR code and mark what vegetables you have had – only need to do it once a week.
Children’s disco: Thank you!
Thanks to your help, the disco raised just above £1,000! Thank you again to all the volunteers, including staff and teachers, and to all parents who contributed via the Amazon Wishlist.

Reception - Trains, cooking and World Book Day
We started our transport topic this week with a focus on trains. We read ‘The Train Ride’ and welcomed Sue from the Platform rail team for a train safety workshop. We learnt lots of train facts and how to stay safe on the train ahead of our trip next week. A group of us made salsa for the veg power Tuesday tasting. We developed our skills of cutting, squeezing and mixing. Look out in the newsletter next week for what the next group made for the Tuesday tasting. The highlight for reception this week was to be able to bring in our bears and cuddly creatures for the World Book Day teddy bears’ picnic. We all drew our bears and described them using our fantastic phonics. We hope you enjoy reading Arabella and Oliver’s writing. We made bookmarks, wrote invitations to the picnic and enjoyed creating our own picnics in the classroom. We also got to meet our buddies and share our favourite stories with them over a hot chocolate and biscuit. We were excited to share our bears with them as well.
We had a great week and are very excited for our train trips next week.
This term Year 1 are learning all about spring. To celebrate World Book Day we looked at the book Little Bear’s Spring by Elli Wollard. It tells the story of a little bear who wakes up from a long winter sleep to find the world is silent and all the other animals are busy getting ready for spring. In the story, Little Bear asks ‘What is the Spring?’ so we wrote speech bubbles to help him understand. We looked at the beautiful illustrations from the story and recreated some of them with watercolours and also made bear bookmarks. Year 1 loved sharing their favourite stories with Year 5 over a hot chocolate at the teddy bear’s picnic.
This week year 2 had the Explorer Dome in school. We took a trip into Space and learnt about stars, planets and constellations. It was a truly special way to immerse us into our learning and to experience the wonders of our solar system up close. Then on Wednesday we shared the classic story 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury in celebration of World Book Day. We wrote some fantastic bear descriptions in Literacy and created some beautiful watercolour paintings in Art. We also enjoyed a Teddy Bear's Picnic in the hall where we drank hot chocolate and shared biscuits!
World Book Day week! Our theme this year was ‘Bears’. We decided to look at the classic ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy. We decided to try and innovate our own version in a comic style. We had some great versions including the Bear taking a rocket to South Africa on Safari and travelling to a desert island for a disco! As well as creating our comics, the children’s bears were invited in and got fully involved with reading for pleasure…it felt like having 20 new pupils!
As well as world book day we have started a new art topic. The artists we are focusing on are Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian. We have been inspired by their artwork and have used it to create our own stained glass artwork.
On Wednesday, we celebrated World Book Day. The theme was bears and it was great to have some furry friends share the day with us! In Year 4, we looked at the book Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne and recreated our own versions of the map of 100 Acre Wood at the beginning of the book with our own settings and characters. We also entered the National Book Token competition and enjoyed reading for pleasure at our Teddy Bear's picnic with hot chocolate and biscuits.
Year 5 - The Bear and the Piano
This week Year 5 celebrated World Book Day by exploring David Litchfield's incredible book The Bear and the Piano. The children immersed themselves into the vocabulary, language and illustrations and wrote their own setting descriptions as well as drawing in the style of the author.
We were also lucky enough to share our Teddy Bear Picnic with Year 1. The children read stories to each other and introduced their teddy bears.
Year 6 - Bears, Books and Buddies
World Book Day
For World Book Day Year 6 brought in their favourite bear stories. Firstly they used the green screen and imovie to retell their stories so that they can be sent to the Reception classes to watch. They did a brilliant job of speaking clearly as well as showing off their video editing skills!
In the afternoon the Y6 children met their Reception buddies for a teddy bears picnic. They shared books, introduced their teddies and enjoyed hot chocolate together.
Tanka Poems
Year 6 are looking at a number of stories this term, taken from a book called Survivors. Each story tells the true tale of many brave souls who escaped from their individual desperate situations. Last week, Year 6 learnt about Juliane Koepcke: the girl who fell from the sky. This week, they are learning about two German families who escaped from East Germany and crossed the border in to West Germany by hot air balloon. The children started the week by listening to part of the story and they then wrote some amazing poetry. The style of poetry is Japanese and these poems are called Tankas. They are always five lines long, each line must contain a given number of syllables and while some lines describe the main event, others use figurative language to convey the emotions felt. Year 6 blew us away with their poems! Take a look at these and see if you can work out how many syllables each line contains:
Try not to be found Shops running out of supplies Like a bird flying Excitement rises quickly Will we be found by soldiers by Belvia |
Paranoid faces Shops running out of supplies It’s now or never Like a rocket taking off Being hopeful just got real by Oscar |
Rules overcame us Freedom motivated us Up went the balloon Like a hawk taking flight Eager and exuberant by Annie |
Secrets our greatest rival Isolated and captured High the balloon went Freedom justice liberty They would soon be upon us by Dana |
