Welcome back to the start of term 4. Disco fever has gripped our school today as excitement mounted for the PTA disco. We will let you know how it went next week. Year 2 journeyed to Ashton Park Secondary School yesterday to participate in a dance festival. It was a most enjoyable morning and the children did so well. Thank you to the parents/carers who accompanied the children.
We are preparing a combination of outdoor learning activities for the children including our trips to Beggar Bush, workshops in school and on the Downs with the Downs wildlife project and hopefully some forest school sessions in our outdoor classroom. We will share dates once confirmed. The cost of these is within the annual voluntary contribution.

Reception- Pancake day and our favourite animals
We have loved spending time with our friends again after half term and continuing our topic on animals. We started the week by reading “Walking Through the Jungle” by Julie Lacome. We enjoyed creating movements and actions pretending to be different jungle animals. We have all enjoyed presenting to the class and telling them about our favourite animals. We have learnt lots of interesting facts and some surprising ones as well.
In Literacy we have been using our phonics to write sentences about animals. We hope you enjoy reading Emily and Alice’s writing. We are really enjoying having writing books and can’t wait to share them with our families at parents evening.
We were very excited about pancake day and talked lots about our favourite toppings! We learnt why we eat pancakes and how to make them. We enjoyed thinking about lent and Ariadna gave an excellent explanation about lent and how it is about giving something up. We talked about what we would give up and some of the things that are being given up are sour sweets, coconut milk, chocolate and a favourite fairy game on the tablet. We enjoyed eating pancakes and reading “Mr Men, Little Miss Pancake Day” It was a very funny book and we knew Mr Tickle would win the pancake race with his extra long arms.
Year 1 - Stanley’s Stick and Pancake Day
Year 1 have dived straight back into their learning this week with new book Stanley’s Stick. It follows the story of a boy whose imagination brings his stick to life; from a dinosaur to a fishing rod – the possibilities are endless. The children have loved imagining what they would like their stick to be – we had wonderful and wacky ideas including a telescope, a banana, a sword and even a rocket ship! They also stepped into the shoes of the main character, Stanley, and articulated how they thought he would be feeling in certain points of the story by writing in thought bubbles.
In RE we discovered the religious history of pancake day (Shrove Tuesday) and discussed what we would give up for Lent. Year 1 got stuck into the pancake making role play area and got the chance to display some impressive flipping skills!
Year 2 - 'In the Jungle' and ‘Starry Eyed’
Year 2 were FANTASTIC at the dance festival at Ashton Park school yesterday. The children came to school buzzing with excitement at the thought of finally performing the dances to an audience made up of Year 2 classes from other schools. The theme of this year’s festival was ‘What a Wonderful World’. We were a fabulous audience, watching other children performing dances about things such as rainbows and under the sea.
2KH were up first and danced their jungle explorer themed dance to ‘In the Jungle’. The tricky choreography didn’t phase them and the dance went perfectly. The festival organiser even called it ‘stage worthy’! Well done 2KH!
2CB followed with a beautiful, twinkly star dance to an instrumental version of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Starry Eyed’. They performed brilliantly with the support of the dance choreographer, Debbie. She couldn’t believe how well they danced having taught it to them in January. Well done 2CB!
Year 3 - Wild Robot and Megacities
Welcome back Year 3 to term 4! We are over half way through the year, we can’t believe how time is flying. As ever, at the start of a new term we have introduced our Literacy book which is ‘The Wild Robot’. This is one of our favourites and we cannot wait to get immersed in the story. We began by exploring the character of ‘Roz’ and did some of our own research into what exactly is a robot, what are they used for, how do they work? We found some really interesting information and the children have grand ideas about developing a robot that tidies their room for them…watch this space!
We started a new Geography topic on ‘Megacities’. This has included a lot of map work, plotting and collecting data from across the world as to where or why these megacities exist. This lead us to look at Brazil and the change in capital city from Rio to Brasilia. We made promotional posters posing as the Brazilian government to persuade people to make the move and even our own model Brasilia!
Year 4 - Roald Dahl’s revolting characters
In year 4’s Literacy lessons this week, we have been delving deep into character behaviours. We read several of Roald Dahl’s most popular stories and talked about the language that made certain personalities quite so revolting! In R.E, we continued to look at our enquiry question: Why is life like a journey. We looked at Christian, Jewish and Hindu weddings and compared the similarities and differences.
Year 5 - The Adventures of Odysseus
Year 5 have had a brilliant week, diving into our new History topic about the Ancient Greeks. We will be trying to identify what the legacy of the Greeks has been so started off by working out who they were and how we can use geographical features on modern day Greece to infer what life would have been like in Ancient Greek times. We have also started our new text - ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’, performed plays about Theseus and the Minotaur and created fact files about different Greek gods and goddesses!
In computing, we were introduced to an amazing coding tool called a Micro:bit which we will be using over the term to tinker with and program on. Consisting of 25 LED lights, we will be able to design code to create different animations to be shown on the Micro:bit.
Year 6 have started their Film Music unit this week very enthusiastically. They've thought about the differences between soundtracks and sound effects and also watched "Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave". Whilst watching the film, they had to listen carefully to the soundtrack and note down instruments they could hear and consider really carefully what effect the music had on the action in the film at different points. We discussed how the composer created tension with bass drums, long notes played by stringed instruments and how the dynamic and texture swell added to the dramatic effect. The musical vocabulary used by the Year 6 children was really impressive!
Mrs Williamson and the Art Team would like to congratulate our KS2 entrants in the Victoria Methodist Church ‘Articles of Faith’ art competition. Children from all over the city were invited to enter and the judging panel looking at the work submitted said they were impressed with the quality of entries and had a difficult time awarding the prizes. In the primary age group, there were prizes for first, second, and third, then ten entries were selected as highly commended. Of these ten, Sofia R in Year 6 work was one of them, she will receive art vouchers as a prize. The Victoria Methodist Church Articles of Faith team has also invited all the pupils who participated to see their work displayed and attend an afternoon workshop. We are sure they will represent the school brilliantly. Really well done all!

World Book Day is coming up on Wednesday 1st March, and the Get Caught Reading Challenge has returned today on Friday 24th February.
The task is simple, ask an adult to take a photo of you reading. To make it more interesting, we would like you to be creative. However, please think about safety when you are posing for the photos. You could dress up for the photo. You might find an interesting location to read. You can even be caught reading with family members.
When your photo is ready, upload it to the special 'Get Caught Reading' Assignment in Google Classroom
If you have taken a group photo with brothers or sisters from school, then please make sure you enter it in all the classes, so that it counts everywhere.
This year, there will yet again be a prize
The class with the most entries (as a percentage of the total number of pupils in their class) will earn a special trip to Waterstones in Clifton Village, where they have a voucher to choose a brand new class reading book.
Have a look at some of last year's entries
Closing date for entries is Monday 6th March.
