- News from the PTA
Thank you to all for a successful term, this final newsletter of term 3 is full of enriched learning opportunities and we are very appreciative of the support we have received this term. The children have been so engaged. Adam from Primary Historical Workshops expressed to me how impressed he had been by our Year 6 children during his day in school on Thursday. He commented on their thirst for information, positive attitude to embrace his activities and how polite the children had been. What great role models for our school-well done Year 6.
We are thinking of families in our community who may have been affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. We are sending our thoughts and prayers of strength and hope at this difficult time.
Online booking is available for parent/carers to meet with the class teachers on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th March. There is a tile on Szapp and also a link in the feed and here: https://christchurchps.schoolzineplus.co.uk/view-session/6

The Agency have had an absolutely outstanding term, where they have worked on their very first mission – Cl.A.S.S – Clean Air Safe Streets. The purpose of this mission is to make the streets around our school safer and cleaner, especially at drop off in the morning and at pick up after school. The Super Agents, who were democratically elected by their peers, have created an advert explaining Mission Cl.A.S.S – link available at the top. The words in the advert are all their own, and demonstrate the true feelings of our children.
Bristol City Council have their own Clean Air Zone (CAZ), Bristol City Council, have also implemented School Streets, whereby the streets immediately outside schools are closed to non-essential vehicles at school opening and closing times. Christ Church has not yet been invited to join this scheme. Our Agency have decided, however, not to wait, hence why they have created Cl.A.S.S – our own School Streets’ initiative.
From Monday 20th February, we would kindly ask you to consider not driving into the streets around school (Royal Park/Kensington Place/Lansdowne Road) to drop off and pick up your child(ren).
As the Super Agents said in the advert, we understand that from time to time there are mornings when you are running late, so you may need to park close to school, but we need everyone to do their bit and make the air clean and the roads safe.
Maybe over half term, if you do drive, you could take a journey to school and look for possible places where you can park, and then walk. Have a look at our helpful map, which shows you how easy it is to park within a five or a ten minute walk away from school - walking of course has additional health benefits.
The Super Agents will be out and about after half term, to offer advice, and share their vision for safer and more environmentally friendly streets.
Thank you
The Super Agents/Mr Campbell
On Wednesday 1st March we will be celebrating one of our favourite events at Christ Church. This year for World Book Day our theme is ‘Bears.’
We are currently planning a fun day based around our theme and will share more details in the first newsletter after half term.
There is no preparation required as we will not be dressing up this year … but we will be inviting your cuddly bears to attend!
Just because it is the last week of term - does not mean that the children in Reception have any less learning to do. In fact it has been positively ‘baarmy’ with all the activities about animals and jobs to be done on the farm.
We took advantage of another sunny day to take our P.E. session outside. Both classes enjoyed exploring how farmyard animals ‘moove’ and played some ‘down on the farm games’ all together.
In maths we have been comparing taller and shorter. We used cubes to measure farm animals and we even measured ourselves outside marking our heights using chalk on the chalkboard.
After reading the books ‘Farmer Duck’ and ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ the children drew their own farmyard maps and thought about the different animals and the names of their young.
There have also been lots of creativity - drawing, making and painting farm animals.
In music we have been finding out about how to use instruments to retell a story thinking about the ‘timbre’ or the sound that is being produced.
As it was Children’s Mental Health week we read a beautiful story called ‘The Invisible string’ by Patrice Karst, which introduced the idea that children have invisible connections to all people that they love. Both classes were asked to create a picture of themselves and all their connections.
We wish everybody a lovely half term and look forward to seeing you all back ready for Term 4.
Year 1 – Anansi’s Diary and Creating with Clay
This week Year 1 have enjoyed exploring the story ‘Anansi and the Golden Pot’ by Taiye Selasi. The story follows Anansi on a holiday to Ghana where he meets a ‘trickster’ spider, also named Anansi, and discovers a magical pot. Year 1 stepped into the shoes of the main character and wrote diary entries about his adventure. In Art, we looked at the work of sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Frink and discussed what we liked about her work, which is inspired by nature and a love of animals. Then we made lion faces from clay, using a variety of tools to create patterns for the mane. We are looking forward to painting them after half term. Earlier in the week, 1AN were very lucky to have Edie’s dad visit us and share some songs on the guitar – we absolutely loved it and lots of us were left feeling inspired to start an instrument. In Science this week, we have been learning all about animals that are herbivores, carnivores and omnivores by looking at the diets of African animals. We have loved Year 1’s enthusiasm for our topic this term and all the wonderful Show and Tell contributions – well done!
Year 2 - Yoga moves and multiplication marvels
Year 2 have had a lovely week in literacy, finishing off our topic on Africa by putting all our knowledge into creating a factfile about Nigeria. We have really enjoyed this topic and learnt so much about the similarities and differences between our cultures.
We also continue to enjoy our yoga sessions with Carolyn. This week we worked on our balancing poses with a partner.
In maths we have been showing how to represent multiplication in lots of different ways.
This week we have put lots of focus on learning and polishing our dance ahead of the dance festival which we are all really excited about attending after half term.
As promised, this week will be a continuation from the end of last week! We were lucky enough to invite ‘The History Guy’ into school to round off our Stone Age topic. The children looked amazing in an array of Stone Age dress and really got into character! We enjoyed a variety of activities including examining bones, archaelogy, hunting techniques, cave painting and archery. The children were incredibly engaged, knowledgeable and respectful and it was the most fantastic day. Here is a selection of many photos we took on the day to give you a snapshot of what we enjoyed.
Year 4 - Easter story and Rain forests
Encounter Christianity joined us in Year 4 this week and delivered a workshop on "What is the Easter story and how do Christians celebrate it?" It was amazing to have visitors in school and to learn about the Easter story. At the end, we decorated pebbles with a symbollic Easter image of our choice.
We have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Amazon Rainforest projects that have been presented this week. We have all learnt lots of interesting facts and it was great to see all the different ways the children chose to do their homework. From videos, to models, to booklets, to posters, to novels, to PowerPoint presentations - we had it all! Thank you to all the parents who were able to support at home.
Year 5 - French shopping, Forces and Safer Internet
Year 5 used all of their learning about shopping in France to role-play a French conversation used in different shops. Customers, first wrote a shopping list of items, then visited a choice of six shops: la boulangerie, le crèmerie, la patisserie, la boucherie, la poissonerie or l’épicerie, Shopkeepers made a range of props to enhance the role-play. Year 5 impressed us with their enthusiasm and French conversation.
This week we have completed science experiments on different types of Forces. We looked at the effects of friction on a paper frog climbing different types of ‘string’ (wool, thread, metal wire, plastic coated wire, and ribbon). We also designed boats to minimise water resistance. We investigated the link between an object’s weight and its mass and the force of gravity on it. In a further experiment, we used newton metres to design a fair test to investigate friction on a variety of different shoes.
In computing lessons this term, we have been learning all about keeping ourselves safe online. Last week we drew Safer Internet Day posters to remind everyone of the main messages of our learning. This week we have focused on online health, learning how technology can affect our health and well-being, and coming up with ways to replace bad online habits with good online habits.
Year 6 - WW2 and Conscience Alley
Year 6 wowed us with their WW2 Homework projects this week. They really have gone above and beyond and produced fantastic pieces of work. Each project was presented to the class and the audience gave 2 stars and wish. Most of the time we couldn't think of a wish because they were so good! We had models of tanks and spitfires; some home-cooked goodies, using rationed ingredients and a dress made with the "make do and mend" notion. We also saw some poignant family photographs and heard of stories as re-told by relatives. Brilliant work Year 6; we are so proud of you! Thank you for sharing your fantastic learning.
Year 6 had a fantastic WW2 day on Thursday - the children dressed up and took part in a day long workshop ran by 'Adam the history guy' from Primary Historical Workshops. From the outset, the children were immersed into the world of WW2 as Adam took on the role of a solider to outline the events leading up to the war. We then took part in an army training assault course; made morse code machines; took on the role of English spies to undergo interrogation and, finally, learned the value of plane identification. All in all, a jam packed, action fuelled, informative day!
This week in English, we are finishing our class book: Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. We have been using it in Literacy to write diary entries; learn debating skills and we have ended this week by writing a balanced argument. Two boys, David and Tuckey, found some German pilots on Dartmoor so we thought about whether the boys should help the pilots or not. Some of us came up with arguments for helping the pilots, whilst others of us thought about arguments against helping them. We then created a "conscience alley" where we took in turns walking down, listening to both sides (for and against) to help us formulate our own opinion.
