Learning Together and about each other at Christ Church is a strength of our school community. This week’s newsletter reflects examples of how we learn about each other’s faiths and cultures and those within Bristol. The children have had workshops within school and have been out and about. Asking questions and hearing first hand helps us all to develop our understanding of the world around us. Thank you to everyone who has helped to facilitate these opportunities this week and we always love to have offers if your family has something about your faith or culture you would like to share.
Industrial action- Szapp and email sent on 26.01.23
You may be aware that one of the teaching unions has announced that following a ballot of its members it intends to call upon its members to take part in industrial action consisting of strike action. The first date is Wednesday 1st February 2023.
In my letter sent on 26.01.23 I confirmed that if the strike action is to go ahead, school will be closed and you should not send your child(ren) to school on 1st February. I have written to parents/carers separately about our provision for children in receipt of Free School Meals or with an Education Health Care Plan.
Thank you for your support.

Reception - The Robin's Winter Song
We have been all a flutter this week in Reception and have really enjoyed learning about birds. We read the beautiful book Robin’s Winter Song by Suzanne Barton. We discussed what we knew about birds and created some super mixed media artwork based on the illustrations from the book.
We found out about different types of birds and in our outside area had fun looking through binoculars, exploring bird houses and making our own bird feeders. If you are out for a walk this weekend see what birds you can spot or hear as we really enjoyed listening to different bird song.
We did some wonderful singing of our own in music this week! We listened to a familiar fairytale and then sang together as a class to retell the story using actions too which really brought the tale to life. Miss B and Mrs Richardson were very impressed by how well we all participated and everyone thought it had been a fantastic music lesson.
This week we started using our sounds to write. We wrote a caption based on a picture in our own special writing book. We tried our best and took a lot of care with our writing. Our adults are all very pleased by our writing achievements this week and can’t wait to see our progress as we continue to be super writers.
In maths we are becoming confident at subitising, we instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group. This week we have been working on the composition of 6, 7 and 8. We read and enjoyed the book Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore and worked really hard working out different ways to make 6, 7 and 8.
On Thursday we were extremely lucky to be visited by Pete and Paul the Firemen who brought their fire engine for us to see. They told us all about special parts of the engine and different tools they use in an emergency. We loved having a go holding the hoses, watching the cutting tools work and seeing the flashing lights.
Next week we are going to be learning all about woodland creatures, we can’t wait!
This week in Year 1 we had a very exciting visit from the Avon and Fire Rescue team. They informed us of all the different roles the fire and rescue service provides as well as sharing some essential fire safety tips. We were also lucky enough to see the inside of a fire truck and have a go with some of the equipment. Needless to say Year 1 had the best time! In maths we have been continuing our understanding of place value within 20 by estimating on a number line from 0-20 and comparing groups of numbers within 20 using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. In PSHE, we have developed on working towards our goals by working in groups to reach a shared goal of building a Lego structure. Another great week in Year 1, well done everyone!
Year 2 were incredibly lucky to have a special visitor in class yesterday. To support our learning on Judaism, Mrs Baum came into talk to us about the upcoming festival of Shevat (Tu Bishvat). The children explored different symbolism and even got to sample fruits such as, dried apricots, pomegranate and grapes. To finish off we heard the story of Honi the Circle Maker. A huge thank you again to Mrs Baum for a very special afternoon.
Also this week, Year 2 have become story tellers by innovating the now familiar story of Lila and the Secret of Rain and creating their own quest story set in the African rainforest. They have produced some really lovely writing.
In maths we have started our unit on multiplication and division and are currently demonstrating how many different equal groups we can make with varying amounts of counters.
This week in year 3 has been a science bonanza! The children have been extremely focused and curious. We have been exploring light and shadow through many experiments. We wanted to discover what causes length of shadows to change. We used torches as a light source and measured in cm the length of shadow when changing the angle by 10 degrees each time. We collated the data and produced a bar graph! The children were so inspired that they wanted to go home and repeat the experiment at home to teach their families. Hopefully you've all learnt something too!
Year 4 - For Forest and Strawberry Thief
Year 4 have done some brilliant writing this week! We immersed ourselves in Grace Nichol's poem 'For Forest' and wrote our own list poem about the beauty of the rainforest and the threat that it faces. The poems took us on an emotional journey and the choice of words and phrase were impressive.
In Computing, we have been designing our own websites about our favourite book on Google Sites. The children have created different pages which give information about the book and author. They have learnt how to insert text and photos, change the font, colour and size and add backgrounds. All this can be accessed from home on their school google accounts if you'd like to continue website design at home!
In Art this week, Year 4 has continued investigating patterns and using ICT to create their own. This week they used William Morris’ Strawberry Thief to inspire possible wallpaper patterns of their own with great success.
Year 5 - Synagogue and La Patisserie
Year 5 has had a great week. We visited the Orthodox Synagogue on Park Row to learn more about why Jewish people would go to worship at a synagogue. It was an amazing opportunity to learn more about the different parts of a synagogue as well as why people go to worship there. The children were brilliant – we’ve already been invited back next year – and asked insightful questions. We returned to school armed with a wealth of knowledge to help us answer our RE enquiry question for the term.
In PE this week, we have continued our work on performing counterbalances during gymnastics. Focusing on transitions, we worked hard to create polished displays before performing our routines and getting feedback on our displays.
In computing, we have started lessons on keeping safe online. During the lesson, we shared our understanding of online dangers and discussed how to avoid or overcome issues.
In French, we have continued learning the vocabulary to shop in France. This week we enjoyed a speaking activity where we worked together in pairs or threes to role-play a shopkeeper and customer. Year 5 not only showed off some great French speaking skills but great acting skills too.
Year 5's enthusiasm for learning has also extended beyond the classroom, they have consistently handed in high-quality homework which has been a joy to share. In sharing homework this week we were treated to chants, songs, games, fact files, research, and more! Year 5 particularly loved singing along with chants created to motivate Shackleton's men and also playing a true or false game about Antarctica.
Year 6 had a visit this week from Michael Gorely from Historic England to help them with their WW2 topic. They learnt how to spot clues on maps and used aerial photography to find houses that were bombed in Bedminster. They also managed to identify Ashton Gate Stadium; The Tobacco Factory; North Street and they became experts at spotting water tanks! Michael shared so much information about how Bristol was bombed; why particular places were chosen (or not) and Year 6 really enjoyed hearing that teachers were on night duty, ensuring that incendiary bombs were dealt with quickly so that the school wouldn't be bombed further. We also learnt that our school site was bombed; this used to be the home of many houses but in 1967 the bomb site was cleared and Christ Church School came in to being.
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Look at these two agents – out and about making our local streets cleaner. After watching David Attenborough, the girls were inspired to help the planet – litter picking was their first task. This extraordinary effort has earned the girls the first ever Agency Award (designed and presented by two of our Super Agents – Sophia and Sofia).
The league culminated last night on a cold, January afternoon, with our two teams representing our school with enormous pride. Well done!!! Thanks to Miss Barsby and Mr Curry for their support over the past few weeks, coaching the teams at the league and at our Early Bird Sessions. Another thank you to family and friends who helped with transport across the city.
