It has been a very busy week in Reception. We really enjoyed the book North Pole, South Pole by Michael Bright which we used to extend our learning and compare the polar regions. We learnt all about the animals in the Arctic and the similarities and differences between Antarctica and the Arctic. We loved using our new knowledge in our small world play.
In P.E. we started our gymnastics and embraced exploring different ways we can move and travel around a space and how we can use our bodies to make some really interesting shapes.
We read the fantastic book Snowballs by Lois Elhert and we were thoroughly inspired to create our own super loose part snow collages. We worked together as a class and in groups and our collaboration was wonderful. We really impressed all the adults working with us!
We were lucky enough to welcome in Esther for a singing workshop. This workshop was able to take place because of the voluntary contributions. Thank you for your support with all these extra-curricular activities.
In maths we have been looking at measuring capacity. We used rice and different containers to explore the ideas of full and empty. We used our knowledge to predict which containers would hold the most and the least.
We are looking forward to next week and learning all about birds and taking part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch!
This week Year 1 have been travelling back in time to understand how toys were different in the past. We compared toys from over 100 years ago with the toys we play with today and described the differences we noticed, paying particular attention to the materials they are made from. In Literacy, we have continued our adventures in the African savannah and wrote poems describing the savannah from sunrise to sunset. In PSHE, we have been setting goals and working out steps to achieve them, including the importance of a ‘growth mindset’. Well done for all your fantastic work this week Year 1!
Year 2 - Continents and Oceans
In Year 2 we have continued to learn about money and how we can make different amounts using different combinations of coins and notes. We’ve got really good at it but it would be great to get more practise using real money at home!
We have also become fabulous storytellers. We have learnt the story of Lila and the Secret of Rain through actions and drama and have retold it in our own words remembering to include all the wonderful description that is in the original version of the story.
In Geography this week we have been learning about the continents and oceans that make up our world. We have learned some songs to help us remember them! We also used atlases and looked at maps on the internet to locate the places that we’ve been learning about.
Year 3 - Light and Messy Maths
It's been another delightful week in Year 3! The children were excited to begin their science topic on Light. We had some interesting discussions about whether the moon is a light source or not and mirrors proved to be the most fascinating part of the week; we learnt about how and why light reflects from different surfaces.
In Maths, the children have been getting to grips with division of a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. They used place value counters and frames to help them to understand the concept of exchanging the tens.
We can't wait to see some of their Stone Age projects later this term!
We have been surrounded by scientists this week as year 4 have valiantly charged through their science unit: states of matter. The children have made predictions, conducted experiments and drawn conclusions from the data they have captured. Oh, and they had a few treats along the way!
Year 5 - Maths, Rivers and Lowry
Monday saw 6 mathematicians head to Bristol Grammar School to take part in a BGS maths challenge. The children were faced with a series of different maths challenges and puzzles and rose to the occasion.
Using the ipads, our Geography lesson this week saw us grabbing the ipads and completing some online fieldwork applying our knowledge about rivers. The children were tasked with finding the source of the River Severn and then following the river along to the mouth of the river. It was fantastic to hear all our key vocabulary being used. Tuesday saw a workshop with Amy Wade from the Bristol Avon Rivers Trust which was another brilliant opportunity to enhance our learning. We used keys to identify some river invertebrates working out if the river water was clean or polluted, studied maps to follow the path of the River Avon and thought about creating houses and gardens which helps to stem the flow of excess flooding.
Continuing on from our work on Ice Trap and Ernest Shackleton, we started a new book in Literacy about Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s assent to the summit of Everest. The children have created fascinating fact files about Mount Everest and have loved researching the perilous peaks!
This week Year 5 finished their Lowry paintings. Completing these we have explored perspective and proportion and the life of Lowry in the industrial North.
Year 6 have been busy designing, building and evaluating their magical playground apparatus. Their DT unit “framed structures” challenged them to use different types of structures and supports to build a fantasy playground. We were very lucky to have our own beautiful playground structures to look at to generate ideas and the children let their imaginations run riot to produce their amazing finished pieces. The Reception buddies came to visit the finished masterpieces and they enjoyed them so much that they took the miniature playgrounds back to their classrooms to play with. Great work, Year 6!
Year 6 have been loving their WW2 project so far. This week we made comic strips, depicting certain historical moments throughout the war. The children have also been excited to share how they have been progressing in their project homework - we can’t wait to see the finished masterpieces!
