The Grand fort is now open! After weeks of anticipation, watching and waiting, we were able to let the children explore our new piece of playground equipment this week. Our PTA led our community to raise a remarkable contribution towards the cost of it. Mr Campbell led a session with the children to consider how to use the equipment safely and then the fortress was open for exploration. The fort is designed for children in key Stage 2 and is located in the play area for Years 3 and 4. Years 5 and 6 children will be given opportunity to explore the fort. Please be mindful as with all of our outdoor playground equipment children should not be using it at pick up and drop off times. A huge thank you to our PTA and everyone who supported with the fundraising. See photos in the article below.
Despite a wet and windy week, we have been very busy indoors (and outdoors when we could). There has been a lot of activity in the sky this week; we discussed the first ever satellite mission launched from the UK and also sightings of a meteor in the night sky.
We also took time mid-week to practise our lockdown procedure. This is how we get safely inside, quickly and calmly should we have reason to. The children were so sensible and it is important for them to recognise the continuous sound of the lockdown alarm and the intermittent siren sound of the fire alarm.

Reception - Antarctica and Emperor Penguins
Reception have embraced all their learning this week. We started the week reading The Emperor’s egg, by Martin Jenkins. We learnt all about Antarctica and found it on the map and the globe. We thought about the clothes we would need to wear and what we would pack if we were going to Antarctica. We enjoyed learning about Emperor penguins and remembered lots of facts! In PE we listened to ‘The March of the Penguins’ soundtrack and worked as a class to waddle like the penguins, huddle and protect the eggs by making sure we didn’t drop them as we moved to the music.
We were lucky enough to visit our buddies in Y6 to see the playgrounds they made in DT. We were so happy that they let us have them to play with. We particularly loved playing with the zip wire, tree house and the slides. We impressed our teachers with our role play and use of talk and language when we were playing.
In phonics we have started to learn vowel digraphs and worked hard to use whiteboards on the carpet to write independently. We demonstrated the values of aspiration and respect in our learning and felt very proud of what we achieved.
We followed instructions and used our fine motor skills to make our own Emperor penguins from collage materials and cardboard tubes. We are very proud of the penguins we made.
We have had a great week this week and learnt lots of facts about the world around us. Next week we are going to learn about the North and South pole and continue learning about different animals.
This week in Year 1 we have been doing place value within 20. We used base 10 to represent the tens and ones within numbers from 11-20 and have been doing lots of counting backwards and forwards to 20.
Year 1 have had a busy week exploring! In Geography we have been learning about our place on planet Earth. This week we built on our knowledge of where we live, looking at the 7 continents of the world. We had a great time using Google Earth to find Christ Church on the map!
In Literacy we have been continuing with our Africa topic. We have used capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to write fact files that are jam packed full of information about lions. We also took a trip to the jungle in PE, concentrating on the movement of body parts to carefully make our way through the trees, avoiding any predators!
This week year 2 were very lucky to take part in a dance workshop. 2CB's dance is all about twinkling stars and 2KH learned a dance about jungle animals. We will be practising our dances in the coming weeks to make sure we are performance ready. We'd like to extend a huge thank you to Debbie for being so patient and teaching us a whole dance in such a short space of time!
We have also had a busy week in class learning about shape poems. At the start of the week we were in groups to learn some shape poems which we then performed in class. We later became poets ourselves and wrote fabulous shape poems about Africa. In maths we have started learning about money and recognising coins in order to make different amounts of money.
In Art in Year 2, our painting theme is water, so this week we looked at the work of the artist Claude Monet and his series of paintings of water lilies. We learned that Monet was fascinated by light dancing on the water and the reflections cast in the water...willows, reeds, clouds...things that move and change constantly. We then enjoyed using block colours and mixing colours in a palette to paint using his style.
Year 3 - Stone Age Boy and Rock Art
It feels like we have time travelled to prehistoric times this week! In year 3 we have continued with our English story ‘Stone Age Boy’ and acted out life in the stone age camp. The children really got into character and the drama has really helped inspire their writing. In fact, it was quite hard to get the children back out of character! We also decided to create our own ‘rock art’. After studying cave paintings and other petroglyphs we used a mixture of plaster of paris and sand to create rock slabs. Once these have fully dried, we will be carving into them just like in Palaeolithic times, using original artwork to help inspire us. We can’t wait to continue exploring this period of History and can here mutterings of what the children have planned for their project homework!
This week, Year 3 enjoyed revising the numbers 1 to 11 in French. They consolidated their knowledge of numbers by playing a board game called Le jeu de l’oie (the goose’s game) which is very similar to Snake and ladders in English. They had to play the game in French. They said à moi(my turn) or à toi (your turn), they said the numbers of the rolled dice and they counted in French on the board. The player who got to the end of the track first said, J’ai gagné ! (I’ve won!). They had a lot of fun!
What a week we’ve had in year 4 this week! We started by throwing ourselves into our netball lessons where we showed brilliant cooperation and perseverance. Then we put on our detective hats – investigating the mystery of an empty Saxon grave at Sutton-Ho. The children worked hard to sift through the clues provided and deciding on the grave’s likely owner. We’ve also been loving our new Power of Reading book, The Great Kapok Tree, which has transported us all the way to the Amazon rainforest. The children have conducted research, created beautiful art (Please take a look at our classrooms!) and performed as animals from the story, imploring the humans to save their homes.
If fired, Year 5 have started to take home their glazed dragons, we think you will agree they look fantastic.
Year 6 - QR Codes and The Beat Goes On
This week in Maths, we have been exploring the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. We have accessed our online work through QR codes (which we learnt about last term in Computing) and completed lots of challenges at different levels.
Year 6 Body Percussion Workshop:
We welcomed Ollie to Christ Church on Wednesday; he is the director of Beat Goes On, an awesome body percussion group, that taught Year 6 a superb routine. Have a look at the link below. On 1st February, Year 6 will join up with six other schools in a combined performance workshop at Trinity Academy. Stay tuned for news from that event.
