Happy New Year!
We are all glad to be back in school and are looking forward to our learning and activities for term 3, 2023. The children have settled really well and three days for the first week back has been a good way to ease us back into our school routines.
Please see the curriculum year group newsletters for further information about what the children will be learning this term.
As advised by UKHSA we are monitoring the prevalence of the winter bugs and viruses that are circulating, please see the letter sent on 3rd January. The letter provided further information about signs and symptoms to look out for if your child is unwell with advice and guidance about what to do if you are concerned. At the moment absence at the start of term due to illness is minimal with many classes having 100% attendance for the first 3 days.
Parent/Carer contact details and medical information for your child.
The start of term is a good time to consider if the information we hold for your child at the school office has changed.
Please update your details of the three named contacts that you have provided for your child should be need to contact you during the school day if you changed your telephone number during the Christmas period. Also, if you have new medical/allergy information for your child.
Admissions for Reception entry September 2023. If you have child who is due to start school in September applications need to be received online by Bristol City Council by 15th January, 2023. Please contact the school office if you would like us to help with this process or follow the link below:

Reception - signs of winter and Firefighter Dave!
Happy New Year!
Everyone made a calm and settled start to the new term after the festive period. Even though it was a short week Reception were still offered many exciting and full learning opportunities!
The children explored the 'signs of winter' - finding out about seasonal changes, animals who hibernate and what people do in winter. Outside they were able to explore ice using different tools to chip out the nature frozen inside. They listened to the stories 'The Snowflake' by Benji Davies and 'Snowball' by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet which inspired them to make their own snowflakes out of paper and cotton buds.
The biggest surprise was a visit from Firefighter Dave who gave a talk about fire safety and then let six, lucky children to dress up in his firefighter gear!! The children listened so well and asked very sensible questions. Well done Reception for your enthusiasm during a short yet jam- packed few days!!
Year 1 - Adventures in the African Savannah
This term Year 1 are exploring the savannahs of Africa. To start our topic, we listened to the sounds of the savannah and tried to guess where our new story is set. We imagined being explorers while listening to ‘One Day On Our Blue Planet: In the Savannah’ by Ella Bailey and wrote lists of all the amazing wildlife we encountered.
In Maths this week, Year 1 have been learning about 2D and 3D shape, creating patterns and carrying out investigations. Well done for a great start to the new year!
Year 2- 3D shapes and symmetry
Happy New Year! Year 2 have had a fabulous start to the year and have really got stuck into their work already. We have continued our learning about 3d shape, using language such as face, edge, vertices, curved and flat to describe the properties of shape. In the photos you can see us engaged in an activity with a partner where we had to describe a 3d shape and our partner had to guess the shape we were describing. We did really well! We have also been learning about symmetry and how to find the lines of symmetry on a 2d shape.
We have also discussed our goals for 2023. It’s going to be a busy year!
Year 3 - jump back to the Stone Age
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break.
It has been lovely to see the children come back excited, happy and eager to share, some have grown so tall they could be year 5! We decided to jump straight in to term 3 by travelling back in time to the Stone Age. This is our history topic this term and as ever, the children have got completely stuck in. We began by sharing existing knowledge (which we were very impressed with how much the children could share!) before crawling into our own caves to produce cave paintings! It was a great start to the term and we cannot wait to carry on exploring and learning throughout the term.
Year 4 - Who were the Anglo Saxons and why did they come to Britain?
Year 4 have had a fantastic start of term! To introduce the children to our history enquiry 'Who were the Anglo Saxons and why did they come to Britain?', we were joined by a special Anglo-Saxon visitor. He brought lots of authentic Anglo-Saxon objects into school and told us all about how and why the Angles and the Saxons came to Britain. We played Anglo-Saxon games, tried on clothes, milled our own flour using two heavy stones and even had the opportunity to hold traditional weapons. It was interesting to find out what Anglo Saxon children were expected to do to support their families, it sounded like hard work!
Year 4 butterfly textile work has certainly brightened up our Year 4 – Year 6 corridor. This work was completed in the Autumn term and uses a technique called batik.
Year 5 - Ice Trap and Matchstick Men
We welcomed Year 5 back and started off our first day by introducing our new Literacy text – Ice Trap. The children were able to find the figurative language in the text and then came up with their own examples of alliteration, metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia and personification with great success.
In art lessons this week we found out about the life and work of L.S.Lowry. We discussed why he painted in the way he did, his use of perspective and listened to the song ‘Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs’. We then sketched a Lowry painting of our choice. Next week, we will use these sketches and turn them into paintings.
Year 6 - Place value and decimals
Year 6 have been busy working with place value and decimals in preparation for their new unit of learning. In art they have been looking at the work of Paul Cezanne which will lead into their still life drawing unit.
